Random Holidays Challenge - Find Reasons to Add Joy to Your Life | ChocolateMusings.com #randomholidays #challenge #findjoy

Why do I Celebrate Random Holidays?

I know I spent a lot of time waiting for joy to come to me, why did it take me so long to realize that I had to go look for it? I had to be the one to add it to my days. So when I came across a few sites celebrating random holidays, I decided to celebrate a few here and there. After a while, I knew I had to share this joy with you.

Just like counting your blessings or writing in a gratitude log helps you see the good things in your life, sometimes it’s necessary to find ways to brighten your days.  I know I feel like I trudge my way through the week just waiting for the weekend. Then the weekend is over far too quickly, and I’m on to the next week, waiting for the following weekend then the next. I don’t want to live my life for the weekend I want to have joy every day!

Not long after we started celebrating random holidays, I noticed my kids started asking when a holiday came up. What’s more, is they started paying attention to the holidays mentioned at school and would be so excited to share how they celebrated with me.

April Random Holidays

There are so many days to choose from, and I collected a few which suit my family & life. You are welcome to select your own and celebrate – you don’t have to use my list! Many of the holidays repeat on the same day of the month every year so you could find yourself with a new yearly tradition.

Happiness Holidays

The pursuit of happiness is a big deal to me. So naturally I have to feature holidays which create snippets of joy. I hope you and your family find some snippets as well.

3rd – World Party Day #WorldPartyDay
6th – Pillow fight day  #PillowFightDay – Repeats on the 1st Saturday.
I’m not sure whether I should classify this as a genuinely random holiday or if I should list it under happiness. I guess it depends on who you fight!
9th – Name Yourself Day #NationalNameYourselfDay #NameYourselfDay
13 – National Scrabble Day #NationalScrabbleDay – in spite of how competitive I am, I love scrabble except when I have a time limit.
16th – High Five Day #HighFiveDay – Repeats the 3rd Thursday of April
16th – Wear Your Pajamas to Work Day #WearYourPajamastoWorkDay – what a great excuse to wear my pajamas all day.
23rd – World Book Day #Worldbookday – I think that books are a source of happiness. Do you think so, too?
30th – National Honesty Day #nationalhonestyday – I don’t know of much more that makes me feel happier than having a clear conscience.

Art/Creativity Days

7th – National Handmade Day #NationalHandmadeDay
15th – Rubber Eraser Day #nationalrubbereraserday – finally, the eraser gets some recognition for its contribution to our various art projects. Without an eraser within arm’s reach, I think I’d give up on creating.

Outdoor Holidays

3rd – Find a Rainbow Day #NationalFindARainbowDay – what a great way to look at the positive side.
5th – National Dandelion Day #dandelionday #nationaldandelionday
5th – Read a Road Map Day #NationalReadARoadMapDay – I suppose that you could read a road map inside. But wouldn’t it be better to read it in a convertible with the top down?
6th – California Poppy Day #californiapoppyday #fieldsofgold – I love poppies, but admittedly I’ve never seen a field of poppies.
22nd – Earth Day #EarthDay
23rd – National Picnic Day #nationalpicnicday – after cleaning up the earth for Earth day – celebrate with a picnic!

15th – Take a Wild Guess Day #takeawildguessday – on account of this holiday and national laundry day sharing the same date, you should take a wild guess of how many loads of laundry I have stacked up. If you guessed between 4 to 10, you’re likely right.

23rd – Talk like Shakespeare Day #TalkLikeShakespeareDay – Without a doubt, Shakespeare has some amazing one-liner quotes. Find some of my favorite Shakespeare quotes – perfect for your planner.

Random Holidays – Google Calendar

After celebrating different holidays for over a year, I decided to create a Google Calendar to see all the holidays I’d love to celebrate. It makes it easy to share creations, words, and ideas on social media and with friends and family. The best part about Google calendars is that you can toggle them on and off when you don’t want to see them.

If you click on the calendar item, it has a link to the source & relevant hashtags! I’m always evolving this calendar – and I will add calendar days or corrections all the time.

Tip: The calendar will show the current month, you can navigate to the month of your choice by using the arrows or dropdown.

If you want to add my calendar to your Google calendar:

  • Go to your Google calendars and click the + next to other calendars
  • Choose ‘add other calendars.’
  • Then click Subscribe to Calendar
  • After that, paste the text below in the “add calendar.”
  • Toggle the schedule on and off when you want to access it – that’s what I do.

chocolatemusings.com_q316ucpnldal611fs2q2nnk7v0@group.calendar.google.com

I won’t list all the random holidays, but just the ones that work with ChocolateMusings.com – so, of course, you’ll see a lot of food, art, creativity & some miscellaneous holidays are thrown in as well.

March Random Holidays

I don’t know about you, but I don’t just want to live for the weekends. Finding little reasons to celebrate regularly will help you slow down the blur and create memories you cherish. Add some fun to your calendar and celebrate a few of these March random holidays with your family.

March Random Monthly Monthly Holidays:

Ready to randomly celebrate? I know that it can feel like trudging through life and just waiting for those short, coveted weekends. Since I found these random holidays and started adding a few to my family’s calendar, the weekdays don’t feel so dreary.

March is a month of crafting & freezing food. I guess they could go together, there is particular creativity about creating a frozen meal or cooking in general.

All month long, celebrate National Craft Month #nationalcraftmonth and Frozen Food Month #frozenfoodmonth. I know I will celebrate by crafting. My favorite crafts usually include paper and watercolor paints. If you had a day or two just to create, what would you do?

March Random Holidays Celebrating Animals & the Outdoors:

3rd – World Wildlife Day
10th – International Find a Pay Phone Booth Day – because we all have a little superman in us?
12th – Plant a Flower Day
14th – Learn about butterflies day
16th – National Panda Day
23rd – National Puppy Day – who wouldn’t want to celebrate this day?!
30th – National Take a Walk in the Park Day – sounds beautiful to me!

Food-Related Celebrations

March has some fun random food holidays. Honestly, these random holidays are the easiest for me to celebrate. And they sometimes help me plan my dinners. Any time I can answer the ‘what’s for dinner question’ without hesitation is one-hundred percent a win. Plus, we get to randomly celebrate, so it makes it a #winwin!

I try to plan a freezer day for meals once a week or once every twice a week since it takes less effort, and it helps me keep track of what I have in my freezer.

Dinner Planning Holidays

6th National Frozen Food Day – in addition to a whole month dedicated to frozen food, it claims an entire day of its own.
7th – National Cereal Day – since it’s on a Saturday this year, I think that the kids should celebrate this day while I snooze.
9th – National Meatball Day – I love it when these national holidays make my dinner plans easier, too.
18th – National Sloppy Joe Day – Sloppy Joes are some of my husband’s favorite dinner meals. It looks like he is cooking this night.
28th – National Something on a Stick Day
25th – International Waffle Day – considering this is my oldest child’s favorite meal – I think I have dinner planned out for this day, too. Do you have breakfast for dinner?

International Waffle Day March 25th Randomly Celebrate | ChocolateMusings.com #waffleday #wafflesfordinner #randomlycelebrate

Sweets & Snacks Holidays

6th – National Oreo Cookie Day (hang on, let me jot that one down in my calendar and highlight it)
6th – National White Chocolate Cheesecake Day – this day could single-handedly destroy my will to stay on my diet.
19th – National Chocolate Caramel Day – yes, please!
23rd – National Chip and Dip Day

March Creativity Holidays

In addition to being national creativity month, there are a few other creative random holidays to celebrate throughout March.

27th – National Scribble Day
30th – National Pencil Day
31st – National Crayon Day

Kindness/Happiness Holidays

I think we all need a little more kindness in the world. It’s something I’m personally working to enhance in my life. But sometimes we forget to be kind to ourselves as well. I’m working on the self-talk running through my head on a regular basis.

Here are some holidays to help remind both you and me to be kind to others and kind to ourselves.

9th – National get over it day – when I found this day while doing my Random Holidays research, I knew I needed to include it in my days to celebrate. I know I have many things to ‘get over,’ maybe it’s a day of renewal and refreshed outlook of life – who knows? But I might just try to ‘get over it.’
13th – National Good Samaritan Day – I absolutely believe that the world can use more good samaritans, and the only way that we are going to increase the number is by becoming one of the good. I know I have personally benefitted from a good samaritan, I’d love to pay it forward.

19th – National Let’s Laugh Day
20th – International Day of Happiness – I love that laugh day and day of happiness are so close to each other – coincidence? Maybe.
21st – National Common Courtesy Day
30th – National I am in control day – we all need a day to tell ourselves that we are in control, right?

Other Random Holidays

2nd – Old Stuff Day
2nd – Read Across America day – My kid’s school is celebrating Read Across America Day on Friday for some reason, but I say celebrate when you can. Thanks, Dr. Seuss, for inspiring so many young readers.
5th – World Book Day – What’s your favorite book?
14th – National Pi Day – I learned that my parents got married on this day – because it was Pi day. Ah, dad, sneaked that one in on mom, didn’t you?
21st – National Fragrance Day – what’s your favorite fragrance? The smell of spring and lilacs are right up there for me.
25th – Tolkien Reading Day – grab a copy of the Hobbit and read away
26th – Make up your own Holiday – What day would you randomly celebrate if you could?
31st – World Backup Day

February Random Holidays

January 23, 2020 Leave a Comment

February Random Holidays Celebrate the Small Things | ChocolateMusings.com #celebrate #randomholidays

The month of February has some great random holidays to add to your calendar and celebrate. Which holidays do you plan on celebrating?

Does it surprise you at all that February has something to do with romance? All month long, in February, we celebrate Creative Romance Month. What would you imagine is creative romance? I believe that it’s breaking out of the same cycle and trying something new.

Maybe instead of dinner and a movie, skip the film and explore a botanical garden. Or on National Kite Flying day, grab your significant other and say ‘let’s go fly a kite!’ Then send it soaring.

February celebrates plenty of delicious and tempting random food holidays because we all know that the diets are off. Let’s bring on the chocolate, Nutella & snackfood (in moderation of course). I wouldn’t mind some hot breakfasts, either.

Random Holidays Challenge - Find Reasons to Add Joy to Your Life | ChocolateMusings.com #randomholidays #challenge #findjoy

Try These February Random Holidays:

Coming up in February – Nutella day. Not only is Nutella celebrated Nationally – but worldwide. I find that people either love or hate it. Are you team Nutella or not?

The 23rd is National Banana Bread Day. I recommend celebrating that random holiday with a recipe for banana bread I found long ago. It is hands down the best banana bread I’ve ever eaten. I get requests from friends to make that banana bread quite often. So I make a bunch (ha!) then freeze it. You’re welcome in advance.

In addition to honoring grapefruit all month long, February also celebrates National Hot Breakfast Month and National Snackfood Month. I’ll take both, maybe hot breakfast & snacks in bed?

Celebrating All Month Long:

  • Creative Romance Month #CreativeRomanceMonth. What is the most romantic thing someone could do for you?
  • Grapefruit Month #NationalGrapefruitMonth – do you eat your grapefruit with sweetener or salt or none of the above? I love to smother mine in powdered sugar.
  • Hot Breakfast Month #NationalHotBreakfastMonth or #HotBreakfastMonth. My kids like waffles, but my husband is not such a fan – he prefers hashbrowns. Besides those two choices, what is your favorite hot breakfast food?
  • Snack Food Month #NationalSnackFoodMonth or #SnackFoodMonth. If you were stranded on a desert island with only one snackfood, what would you choose?

State Random Holidays in February:

  • 1 – National Texas Day
  • 8 – National Iowa Day
  • 15 – National Wisconsin Day
  • 22 – National California Day

State Holidays

In celebration of the state’s statehood birthday, each month, the honored state will be on sale! I created 8 variations for each state, and they make lovely wall displays. Print it out, and frame it, and show it off! They make great gifts! All the states are available in my shop!

Random Food Holidays in February

Because celebrating with food is so much fun! Food usually means someone else is involved (though, it doesn’t have to if you don’t want to share!)

As a family, we loved celebrating National Popcorn Day in January. We munched on this treat while watching a movie. I can’t tell you how much my kids look forward to celebrating these random holidays.

  • 1 – Eat Ice Cream for Breakfast Day – the holiday that started it off for me. When I found this obscure random holiday last year, I knew there had to be more fun holidays. Guess what? I was right.
  • 5 – WORLD Nutella Day #wordnutelladay #nutella #nutelladay
  • 6 – National Chopsticks Day #nationalchopsticksday. My daughter and I love using chopsticks. However, no one else in our family likes to use them.
  • 9 – National Pizza Day #NationalPizzaDay What’s your favorite pizza? I like chicken, mushrooms, olives and alfredo sauce.
  • 11 – Don’t cry over spilled milk day. (I have to ask – is this considered a food day or just a random holiday?)
  • 14 – National Cream-Filled Chocolates Day
  • 19 – National Chocolate Mint Day. Two of my favorite flavor combinations. Actually, chocolate & mint are the inspiration behind the colors of my blog!
  • 20 – National Muffin Day – We love coffee cake muffins – anything with cinnamon & sugar topping it must be good!
  • 23 – National Banana Bread Day (Don’t miss my favorite banana bread recipe, it’s SO good!)
  • 24 – National Tortilla Chip Day – melt a little cheese over the top and dip in salsa. Chips & salsa are absolutely one of our favorite snacks.
  • 25 – National Chocolate Covered Nut Day anything covered in chocolate makes it better, right?

Pet/Animal-Related Random Holidays

  • 3 – Golden Retriever Day #goldenretriever #goldenretreiverday – I would love to get a golden retriever!
  • 20 – National Love your Pet Day – Shouldn’t it be ‘love your pet’ every day? But I guess pets need a special day too.
  • 27 – National Polar Bear Day #NationalPolarBearDay

Other Random Holidays in February:

  • 1 – National Get Up Day – Whether you want to or not, I’m sure some people will celebrate this holiday. You could get up and eat ice cream for breakfast if that helps.
  • 7 – National Periodic Table Day #PeriodicTableDay – by the way, you should look up Periodic Table puns. There are so many good/bad puns related to the periodic table!
  • 7 – National Send a Card to a friend day #SendACardToAFriendDay How cute is this random holiday? Near or far, we all have friends that could use a random card in the mail.
  • 8 – National Kite Flying Day #NationalKiteFlyingDay. Years ago, we bought some nice kites & have flown them for over a decade. If you get the chance to buy a nice kite, do it. They glide on the slightest breeze and don’t require miles of running to get them in the sky.
  • 10 – National Umbrella Day #NationalUmbrellaDay
  • 11 – National Make a Friend day. I know as an introvert it’s very hard for me to reach out to people, but it’s nice to remember that others might have an equally hard time as well. It’s ok to use this day as an excuse.
  • 14 – National Ferris Wheel Day. Do you have a Ferris wheel near to where you live? We have one not too far away in Downtown Atlanta. I’ve decided that I’m adding riding it to my bucket list – I can’t believe we’ve never ridden it!
  • 17 – National Random Acts of Kindness Day Let me ask – why is this not a month-long holiday? After all, we should celebrate this random holiday for more than just a day.
  • 26 – National Tell a Fairy Tale Day #TellAFairyTaleDay
  • 28 – Floral Design Day (This day works perfectly with our Floral Alphabet Challenge!)

What Will You Celebrate?

Of all of the holidays, which random holidays will you add to your February calendar? Start by adding one or two random holidays. It’s ok to miss them if you’re too busy.

Whatever you choose, I hope they add a little spark of joy as a result of celebrating or even adding them to your calendar. That’s why I started adding random holidays to my schedule and why I decided to share them with you.

I won’t list all the random holidays, but just the ones that work with ChocolateMusings.com – so, of course, you’ll see a lot of food, art, creativity & some miscellaneous holidays are thrown in as well.

Need some ideas on how to celebrate the random holidays?

After deciding which days you’ll celebrate, choose how to celebrate. It’s not necessary to go out and celebrate. After all, there’s no one way to mark the occasion. If you want to create something in commemoration of the holiday, be my guest.

Need Some Ideas for Creating Using Random Holidays as Your Inspiration?

That sounds fun. Here are some ways you can be creative!

  • Letter the name of the holiday (want to learn to hand letter? Here’s where to start handlettering.)
  • Write it in funky fonts (check out this post for ideas.)
  • Take a picture (I heard selfies are a thing 😜).
  • Doodle the holiday
  • Paint a picture of the holiday or you celebrating the holiday.
  • Write a blog post or journal entry.
  • Create a planner spread.
  • Create a color palette inspired by the holiday.
  • What imaginary character or Disney Princess would most likely celebrate this holiday?
  • What colors should we choose for this holiday?
  • Make a favorite dish or create a new recipe in honor of the day.
  • If the holiday had a mascot, what would it be?
  • Don’t let my ideas limit you. Find something that inspires you, and create!

If you don’t create anything – spend the time with your family or friends! It’s all about creating a better, more fulfilling life. I believe these silly, random holidays help add a little smile to your face and a bit more laughter to your days. Choose to add joy to your life.

January Random Holidays

Random Holidays: Create Pockets of Joy - January 2020 | ChocolateMusings.com #randomholidays

I hope that part of your goal-setting for this year includes taking time for you and your family. Add some of these January Random Holidays to your schedule and start creating moments you’ll cherish. Don’t forget to check the bottom of the post for the calendar link so you can easily add the holidays to your calendar.

Add Pockets of Joy

Creating pockets of joy, snippets of celebration regularly helps slow the rush of time and pauses the fast-forward effect we all encounter. Since time seems to be moving at an all-time high speed, I decided to create a calendar of all the Random Holidays I wanted to celebrate every day.

Some random holidays seem goofy or silly but it creates a bond for our family. For instance, we celebrated #SarcasmAwarenessMonth for October. Anytime we would say something silly or sarcastic, everyone would say ‘Sarcasm Awareness Month!’. For younger kids, it helped teach them the difference between seriousness and joking.

We celebrate my black cat, named Baghera on October 29th (Black Cat Day). She gets a special kitty treat that day, which my kids love to give her.

January Month-Long Random Holidays

Check out the history of some of these Month-long Random Holiday Celebrations. The story of the Black Diamond intrigued me, so of course, I had to include it in my list of celebrations. As an advocate for creativity and hobbies, it was only natural to include both holidays. What hobbies or creativity do you hope to focus on this year or month?

Fire up the Crock-Pot and let’s get going!

  • National Black Diamond Month #BlackDiamondMonth
  • National Hobby Month #NationalHobbyMonth
  • Creativity Month #CreativityMonth
  • National Slow Cooking Month #SlowCookingMonth

January Random Holidays – Hobbies/Creativity

I guess most of the random holidays could be considered a hobby or lead to creativity, but what I would love for you is to find a hobby you enjoy and work at developing it. Create a challenge for yourself, whether you set a goal for 365 days, a month, or a week, work to build your creativity. Here are 5 easy steps to develop a new skill.

I find that when I think creatively, it builds on itself and develops further. But if you find yourself in the middle of a creative slump, check out this post.

Overcome the ‘Busy-ness’ of the Season – Create a Few Choice Moments by Randomly Celebrating

The end of the year gets very busy for most people. Christmas celebrations, end of the year parties, wrapping up the loose ends at work, goal planning, traveling all contribute to the hum of the season. I tried to choose Random Holidays for December that worked naturally with the month’s festivities.

If you’re like me, you find that December whips by without realizing it. I don’t want to add any additional stress to your busy month except for a reminder to slow down and enjoy the season. If you have kids or family nearby, sometimes the best moments are the ones where you simply enjoy each other.

About Me

Hi! I'm Tricia, the creative behind ChocolateMusings.com, I know how it feels to lose your inner muse. After years of darkness (which I call the dark ages of my life), I found my inner muse hiding in the forgotten corners of my soul, I vowed never to lose sight of her again.

Bullet journaling helped reignite the passion for art and living life again while organizing my days. I also discovered modern calligraphy and watercolor. Since then, my use of the bullet journal system has evlolved and I call it 'creative planning'. Here on the blog, I show you how to use your planner to ignite your inner muse and explore creativity and art while staying beautifully organized and living a joyful life.

I invite you to grab some good chocolate and dive into my musings. Let’s ignite your inner muse.
