Custom Watercolor Family Portraits – Why was I Scared to Try?

November 27, 2018 3 Comments

Watercolor Family Portraits

Have you seen these simple, yet beautiful watercolor family portraits in your Instagram or Pinterest feed? I admired them greatly and longed for the confidence to do something like that. But alas, I always told myself that I don’t draw people.

One day, on a whim, I asked my niece, Alexis, (who is a photographer in Charlotte, NG formerly in Oklahoma) for a full-body picture of a couple so I could try it out. Lo, and behold! I did it! And it didn’t look half bad! In fact, I admitted to myself, it looked good. What’s more: I enjoyed it! Here’s a secret. The picture on the top is the first one I EVER did. Ever. It’s always a learning process to evaluate how to improve, but fear kept me from trying. If you let fear keep you from trying, you’ll never discover new passions or hidden talents.

The Thing

Here’s the thing: I’ve always enjoyed shading I love seeing where the light forms and how it rounds an object. In my opinion, light is the key to shape to an object. I may not be good at faces (well, I’ve not put in the practice to BE good), but I am good at shading, and it will only get better. Why I was so scared, I have no idea, but I sure am glad I tried. These watercolor family portraits are so much fun to do. I love seeing the personality in each person come alive from sketch to finished product.

If you have something you want to try: Try it. Go for it. If it doesn’t turn out great on the first try, learn more about it. Then try it again.

If you’d like me to {digitally} paint a picture of your lovely family (sans faces because that’s my style) visit my shop! Don’t worry, I print them and send them to you too.

Motivational Take Away

Here’s the take away: try it. Just try something you are terrified to do.

Life Changing Magic of Tidying – Experiment

April 22, 2018 7 Comments

The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up – Experiment

Anything that promises true magic grabs my attention. Not the hocus pocus, you’re a frog kind of magic, but the kind that promises a more fulfilling, better life. I’ve avoided this book successfully for the past two years. I heard whisperings of it from several people I followed and chalked it up to mere hocus-pocus. It wasn’t until my home reached a breaking point of clutter did I consider reading The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. Sometimes I wish I weren’t so headstrong and stubborn

Are this book’s methods too good to be true? I plan on finding out.

Decluttering by Category - Bullet Journal spread & tracker

Book Review

FYI – I don’t like book reviews. I don’t think it’s fair for someone to pour their heart out in book form, and then I leaf through it, reading it one time and calling it good or bad. Since I regularly read self-help books – conventional rating systems don’t work for me. I decided that my book reviews would have a qualification assigned to each ‘star.’

My Rating Qualifications:

  • Did I take notes?
  • Would I tell a friend about it?
  • Would I re-read it?
  • Did I buy the book? OR If I got it from the library, would I check it out more than once?
  • Did it motivate me to make a change?

I have to be honest – the fourth question needed qualification – I don’t know that I will be buying an extreme amount of books in the future after reading this book. So I had to add an extra part to the question – if I check out the book more than once from the library.

With those questions in mind:The life-changing magic of tidying - 4.75 Stars

My book review is 4 3/4 stars with this note: I’ve only checked out the book once from the library, but I did get the 2nd book by the author, a companion, expanded version of this one called Spark Joy and started reading that one too. I guess that I will probably check it out again in the future. (Read Amazon Reviews here – it looks like theirs is similar to mine)

Experimenting on the Word

Have you ever heard of experimenting on the word? Let me explain if you haven’t. After reading a book that claims to change your life – you can’t rely on just the words; you have to do the things that it tells you to find out if a book is life-changing or not. I’d like to see if this book changes my life as it proclaims. The best way for me to see if it does it to try out its methods and see if what it claims is true.

A Chocolate Musings Experiment

Current Living Arrangements

Let me tell you why I picked up the book in the first place. We live in a three-bedroom house, and I have three children. Their stuff is everywhere; my things are everywhere. The baby still sleeps in my room, despite being 14 months, there is just no room for him in his sibling’s rooms. His crib is in the nook in my bedroom (thankfully we have that alcove). My husband and I took over the dining room with our desks. (In a house this small, is a separate dining room essential? We have an eating area already.)

I am not going to debate opinions on sleeping arrangements with children – that’s not what this blog is about, and there are lots of different viewpoints out there. Let it suffice to say that the stuff in our house reached a breaking point. Either our house would break or I would. We want to move to a new home soon with other options like a fenced in backyard, or even one with just a backyard at all. We are not at the point yet where we can move. It’s coming, but not yet.

It Called to Me From Way Over There

My goodness, there’s lots of background story with this one. Anyway, when I took the kids to the library the other day, I wandered around the library and finally had to ask a librarian to find this book. FYI, it was in the parenting section. I brought it home and looked at it for a couple of days. Then I started reading The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. At first, I thought I was going to take notes. I’m a terrible note-taker when reading, I try to write only the important things. Well, I end up recording everything, and I end up with incomprehensible notes or pages and pages filled with sloppy word-for-word sentences that have no significant meaning.

Book notes - the life changing magic of tidying up - The KonMarie Method of decluttering

Reading the Book

I started with this method of note-taking and soon filled a spread in my bullet journal. I didn’t want to fill more pages, so I decided to go back and re-read it if I felt so inspired and take the notes that are important. So I set down my pen and paper and started reading the book.  The book took me about two hours (ish) to complete. I brought it to the park while the kids were playing and then couldn’t get my nose out of it long enough to fix dinner.

Perhaps this book wouldn’t appeal to all, but I LOVE organizing. The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up is more than organizing. It’s a way of life. In the past two years of avoiding this book, I read silly memes referencing this book and tossing things they didn’t love (like bills, their husband, the noisy dog, etc.) but they were still stuck with all their stuff.  I desired some way to get rid of stuff and a lot of it. If we are moving sometime soon, I don’t want to pack it all and take it with me.

It’s Appeal

I’ve glanced sideways at a minimal lifestyle. You know, toured Ikea’s 240 square foot house and briefly thought about living that type of lifestyle and had no idea how even to start. I’m not saying that is the goal by any means, but willingly getting rid of the unnecessary stuff in my life taking up space and keeping only what I love is exceptionally appealing.

After finishing that book promising magic, I wanted more. Not more stuff, but more of her words. But I let it sit for a while, days, so I could spend some time thinking about what I read and if I was ready to jump in with two feet. This method of life-cleansing is not one you dance around. It is one that you jump in both feet and submerge yourself.

Did I Undo the Effects Before I Started?

Before starting on my closet containing years of memories and clothes I used to love or thought I liked, I went on a fun girl’s day shopping trip with my friend. Sounds counter-productive, doesn’t it? I felt so too. But before I knew it, my cart quickly filled with finds, and I had more than 20 pieces to try on plus a new purse. In the dressing rooms, I thought about what I read. Instead of taking home half of my cart, I thought about each item and if I loved it. I ended up buying three things, and I was very excited to wear them. Already different from previous shopping trips.

My Husband Says It Makes Sense(?!) Economically

I talked to my husband about the book and described to him some of the methods used in the book. Like saying thank-you to your clothing for being there or teaching you valuable lessons of personal fashion (some clothes just aren’t for you!). The act of thanking them allows you to let them go. When I presented the concept to my husband, his economics degree supported this concept.

He said, “it makes sense that it is hard to let something go because of ‘sunk cost’ or that you have spent so much time and energy and money on that one thing that you keep it just for that reason.” So many people have held to businesses long after they should have, kept dusty memorabilia in their homes from trips taken or not able to let go of those gorgeous shoes that they wore once because they spent money on whatever artifact is now occupying their home.  My husband suggested that saying ‘thank you’ was breaking the psychology of  keeping that item because it was a ‘sunk cost.’ I tried it, and it worked.

The Wait, the Anticipation

Due to schedules and appointments, I waited another couple of days before I could sort out my clothing. I have to admit that I was getting more and more excited to go through it though. So finally one day after work, I came straight home and started on my ‘little project.’

Marie Kondo suggested that it would take six months of your life to sort through your whole house. I don’t doubt it. This morning, hubby made the bed (thanks hubby!), so I could start efficiently on the project and pile all my clothes and sort them there. Pretending like Marie was there asking me if I loved an item, and thinking hard about not what I was getting rid of, but instead what I was keeping, the donation bags grew fuller and fuller.

KonMarie Method - decluttering and sorting through all the stuff - real life experiment

No Before, but a During and an After

Like many things I start doing, I forget to take ‘before’ pictures and realize after I start the project. I cleaned out my closet. Gathered every article of clothing I possessed, each handbag, every pair of shoes and all the socks I owned. From just my closet, I stuffed three 45-gallon bags, and I threw out a big box of trash.

Two hours passed, more like flew by. I ended up with 20 shirts and about ten pairs of pants and shorts, and I was happy. I kept only things that gave me joy. There were items in the back of my closet that made me feel sad because of experiences in past jobs. I liked the feel of the fabric against my skin, but my heart was heavy every time I saw it hanging in my closet, and what’s more, I could never bear to wear it again. I can’t say how good it felt to say thank you and goodbye.

It Just Might Be Magic Afterall

I cannot wait to start another category. I do feel like I kept too many socks. What can I say? I love me some fuzzy socks.

The goal is to keep it up for six months and see where I am at that time. Is anyone else willing to go on a binge house-cleaning/organizing spree with me? I’d love to have some friends.

I created this layout before reading the book, thinking to do a little at a time. Now I know that it is not the most accurate way to track progress with the KonMari method. But I like crossing things off, so I’ll use it anyway and make perhaps some other trackers as well.

Declutter bullet journal spread
Results - how much have I gotten rid of so far using the KonMarie method?

Results:

I reduced my closet to 1/4 its size, I love finding pairs of socks. I don’t miss any of the clothes I never wore anyway. The shoes that hurt my feet? Gone. The worn out handbag? Gone too.

Total Number of bags taken for donation: 4

Number of Trash/Recycled Bags: 3

In the coming weeks, I’ll share progress and reports of how this little experiment is going. Even if it doesn’t last, I’ll be glad to get rid of stuff. But I’m hoping that it produces the magic that it promises.

Plans, Ambitions & Attitude of Gratitude

March 1, 2018 4 Comments

Alright March, I’ve heard you come in like a lion…let’s do this thing. I’ve got ambitions and a bullet journal set-up to prove it. I’ll post the bullet journal set-up later.

February Review

Unfinished Projects Bullet Journal Spread

One day, because we’re kind of nerdy, my husband and I looked up why February was shorter than all the other months. What I remember of that brief Google search is that they hated that month. Farmers didn’t like that month, and it was a month to be cast aside and anticipate what was coming next. Well, this year, I can’t say I disagree.

My February mid-month habit check was pathetic (my habits and I were on a break) and nothing seemed to work well last month. After some introspection, I discovered that I was not writing things down and I was just trying to keep it all in my head.

Why?

Partially because I was moving to a new notebook and I wasn’t making consorted effort to keep track of all my projects. So I just got frustrated. Then I was frustrated that I was frustrated. Have you ever been there? I know am not alone. A minimalistic mind map layout showing my unfinished projects seemed to clear the fog.

Plans Do Not Have to be Linear

My February weekly spreads are distinct and different week to week! I recorded videos and walked you through how to create them. I even did real-time freehand drawings so you could see more of the process. Well, guess what? I never posted them. During my slump, I wondered if it would even be worth posting. The month ended, and it wouldn’t be ‘in the month that I created it.’

So is it worth it to post? Absolutely! I figure you wouldn’t have used it in February anyway.

I’m Thankful for SunshineRandom thoughts and great ideas bullet journal spread idea tracker brain dump

Thankfully the cloudy thoughts parted, and figurative sunrays enlightened my mind. I realized that just because the week has passed, the information is still useful! So I will post those weeks later. I got so caught up ‘in the moment of relevance’ that I forgot to take time to ‘be in the moment.’ Posting my March welcome page the day before or the week before on Instagram isn’t necessary. I realized that I love seeing past month’s posts from others and it doesn’t matter to me if it is for that month or not. Inspiration doesn’t need a timeline to be inspiring.

There’s so much I want to share with you! Pages and pages of ideas scatter through my notebooks. I hope you come here hungry for inspiration because I want to serve you a feast.  My ambition is to live by the concept of the design rather than the date in my notebook.

My Inspiration:

I have to credit a couple of people for this inspiration. One is my friend at TheAniKay.com – Ani and I got to meet when she was here in Atlanta for work. We got dinner at one of my favorite spots (Tacos & Tequilas), and then we went to Michael’s. It was a good day! When Ani posted her change of mindset on her blog (read it here), and it got me thinking. I am not one to follow the crowd and never have been.

Tales of a 6th Grade Nothing:

In 6th grade at lunch one day, I remember one of the popular girls asked me to sit at her table (an outsider’s dream!). At first, my heart pumped, and I could hear my heartbeat throbbing in my ears with excitement. But then I told her no.

When I told her no in that split second, I knew that I didn’t want to do what the other girls at that table did. Their hair was the same, and their clothes were from the same store, they even talked the same. I didn’t want to be a copy. Most of all I didn’t want to act the way they acted, they weren’t very nice.

Ambitions: What’s coming:

Since then, I have thought a lot about what I wanted to do. I love posting my monthly & weekly spreads, quotes, mantras, etc. That will continue, but maybe not in the order of creation.

I’ve also wanted to curate inspiration from all over to get your creative gears turning. That is, after all, the goal here.  I will be adding a ‘favorites day.’ I want to share with you what inspires me and what my favorite things are.

Who I am & what I like to do, a definition of me, Bullet journal Collection

Instagram Does Not Rule My Life

Instagram’s algorithms display my content days or weeks later than I post. So why does it matter when I post the content? I am not going to live and die by the way Instagram decides to serve (or not serve up) my content. If I am busy living life and don’t get to post something the day I should according to the current platform algorithm, well, good for me. I’m living life.

What Does that Mean?

That means my posts won’t be timely when it comes to weekly & monthly layouts (posting the week/day before the date occurs on the calendar). But I think that timelines are irrelevant when it comes to that anyway. You can recreate a spread from my March into your October or December journals without caring that it came from my March spread.

You can use an idea from a collection and turn it into a tracker or another spread.

This blog is meant to inspire. If it is only inspirational right this minute, well, that’s a lot of effort for just a moment. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and let that take over.  I have three kids, a husband, a house, a job, a cat, church responsibilities. I drive like a civilized human being, I try to smile at strangers (I have an ongoing battle with RBF), and I am trying to make the best of things in my life. Following my advice: plan your life, so you live beautifully. Sometimes living beautifully means that I live on my schedule and I go to the park instead of edit a video.

Ambitions: Help You Find Your Inner Muse

I love creating content for you. Hearing that I helped make a difference in your life and ignited your inner muse is AMAZING. I lived through years of what I call the ‘dark ages’ where I never touched a paintbrush or picked up a pencil. When I finally rediscovered my inner muse, I vowed never to let her go. I intend to help others find their inner muse and enjoy life too.

Life is complicated and messy. My bullet journal has helped restore some order to my life, and for that I am grateful. I am also grateful to create and be creative.

I hope that no matter when you find this content, you will be inspired in some way.  And the figurative sunrays will find their way through cloudy thoughts and lighten your day.

My goal in life is to be happier. I read books on the subject, make goals, create habit trackers, all to lead a happier, more fulfilling life. Forgive me if I am behind on posting my weekly or monthly layouts. I am working on forgiving myself for it too.

Here’s Your Challenge:

Decide who you are and be that. Choose what you do, who you talk to, your friends, when you post to social media, and how you live your life.

The Beautiful Why of Planning

November 7, 2017 2 Comments

Plan Your Life So You Live Beautifully – The Why of Planning

Someone very near to me (who will remain unidentified) questioned why I plan. They didn’t see a point to practicing my handwriting and my lettering. They suggested that I get my priorities in order. Um… Isn’t that what I am doing when I am planning? This conversation devastated me, and probably took a month or longer to shake off. It was with someone who I expected to back me up and to understand me – no matter if they understood what I was doing. Their suggestion stated that they did neither.

I don’t know what they were meaning when they told me that I should get my priorities in order. I took it to mean that they thought I was wasting my time. But the thing is…I have so many big plans and so many ideas! Tired of sitting, doing nothing but I had no purpose. It wasn’t until I started planning that I felt like I had a purpose to my life. Before I started planning, I was wandering blindly through life, not enjoying anything. To be completely honest, I was miserable and I made everyone else around me miserable too.

I realize a lot of people out there who might not understand what I do or why I do it.

I came up with a list of reasons why I plan:

  • I plan so we, as a family, know what we need to do.
  • So we don’t miss an appointment.
  • Personally, I plan so I can have more time to carry out what I want to do.
  • I plan so I can get my errands done in record time so we can do other fun things like go to the park, go on walks, so we can play outside, or watch a movie as a family.
  • I plan so we have more quality time together.
  • I plan so I can live better.
  • I plan so I don’t spend as much money on eating out.
  • I plan to save money.
  • I plan because I like feeling accomplished.
  • I like to set goals.
  • I like to see how far I’ve come.
  • I plan because it helps balances me emotionally, physically, and spiritually.

I plan so I can live more beautifully.

This has become my planning/life mantra when I came up with it a couple of months ago. You may have noticed in earlier blog posts. Now you know why.

The beautiful why of planning | Reasons why I plan. Plan your life so you live beautifully.

There are lots of different ways to plan.

There are many planning systems to use: hardbound, traveler’s notebooks, spiral bound, pre-dated, disc bound etc. Styles of planning are endless – minimal, art journaling, weekly, monthly, daily and a mix of these. Add accessories such as stickers, washi tape, doodling hand-lettering, or stamps. None of these options is wrong if it works for you. I like the bullet journal because I can change it to suit my needs. One week I may need a very clean, minimal layout, the next, I may need to immerse myself in a full-color water-painted page with pretty lettering and motivational quotes. Creating is part of my ‘why’ for planning and I like a variety.

Re-discovered Talent and Passion

I used to paint and draw every day. Then life happened to me and I forgot. I literally forgot that I liked to draw and paint for 12 years. When I started keeping a bullet journal as a planner, the pages were open for my interpretation. I started doodling again. Then I started drawing again. Shortly after, I found a paintbrush and I tried something new for me – water coloring. I had never attempted to watercolor before. What was this magic I had missed? Not long after this, I started seeing this concept of hand-lettering words and phrases that looked like calligraphy.

I practiced calligraphy a long time ago, but this looked different to me. I started trying to make the thin and thick lines that were so clear in this newfound version of calligraphy. And quickly fell in love with it.

Personal Changes Accompanying the Filled Pages

As I filled up the pages of a dotted notebook, I realized that I was changing too. I had passion in my life and I loved more deeply, not just journal-related things, but the people in my life as well. I found that I wanted to improve – as a person. Setting goals became a regular thing in my life; I haven’t liked to set goals before I started planning and keeping a journal. I do now and I enjoy it. Seeing the improvement is addictive.

What’s more, is I have started to accept myself as a person. I have started to see my worth.

This change is the most significant change I have seen in my life. Ever. Because there were times that I questioned if I belonged anywhere.

So to the anonymous person that questioned me and told me to get my priorities in order. I am. I am more than you know. This little book has brought me from the lowest of lows in my life to a place where I enjoy living again.

So friends, ask yourself why do you plan? And be honest with your answers. Certainly, you’ll discover some real gems in your life.

I plan so I can live more beautifully.

I hope you live your life so you can live more beautifully as well.

Give your Goals & Plans a Defined Timeline

October 31, 2017 7 Comments

End of Year Planning – Don’t Leave it to the Last Minute

Start Early on Next Year’s Planning with a Super Simple Planning Spread – Give Your Goals & Plans a Defined Timeline. November seems like a great time to set some goals for next year. Specifically the first two weeks of November. Why then? Well because Halloween has come and gone and Thanksgiving or other holidays have not come yet. Visiting family will not arrive yet, and if you are vacationing or leaving, you have some time before the packing begins. There is a certain quiet about this time – the air is still buzzing with excitement that comes from the end of the year activities, but parties and plans have not started up – yet.

Goals & Plans a Defined Timeline - setting up for this month, next month & next year

The other reason it makes for perfect planning for next year is that next year is close, but not too close. You have some time to think. You have some time to reflect. The time is perfect to think about what you want from the next year. I am not talking about achieving anything – though you can certainly include achievements – I am mostly talking about what you want to become as a person. Become what is important to you.  Decide to spend your time doing the things that will give you happiness, joy, and peace in your life.

Use the quiet spaces in the month to plan ahead and define your goal timelines | Start your goals with a timeline, not an obscure 'someday'

Define Your Timelines

This is my variation of the short-term, mid-term, and long-term goal planning. I was never good at using those planning terms – I needed a definition for the meaning of short-term, mid-term, and long-term. So I defined the timelines for me. It makes me work harder because I now have an accountability to time.

Short-term for me is Monthly.

Mid-term is something I want to accomplish in the next 2 months (sometimes I extend it to 3 months). In this case, I will be planning to complete by the end of the year.

“Next Year” I define as ‘by the end of next year’ – these are long-term goals**. I will define these more in-depth for the start of the year. This section is actually the reason I created this spread. I wanted to start thinking about my plans and goals for next year so they didn’t get swept away by the flurry of the holidays.

**I have an even longer-term goal type (more than a year) but I did not include that on this spread.

Break Your Goals into Achievable Times

Break your goals down into achievable times – when you expect to get these things done. Start where you are and give yourself a timeline – not an obscure ‘someday’. Stretch yourself a little, be patient with yourself and make goals realistic.

This month with my focus on simplicity, I made a planning & goals page extremely simple so I was not distracted by all the ‘shiny’ things. I tend to flit from one place to another and never get anything done. So I laid out this page with simple functionality in mind. (The bottom picture shows without lines for an even more simplified look).

Start Early on Next Year's Planning with a Super Simple Planning Spread - Give Your Goals & Plans a Defined Timeline

Whatever Your Plans, No Matter Your Goals

Whatever your plans or goals for the coming months or year might be, take a moment to begin your planning for next year, whether it be to spend more time on self-care, cook more, lose weight, de-junk your house, using a planning & goals page is a good place for jotting down your ideas for yourself.

Do this now before life becomes more hectic so when you are sitting down after Christmas laying out your January planner you smile knowingly at yourself and can think “I’ve already set my goals for next year”. Go ahead, call yourself an overachiever. Because you are ahead of the game.

I’d love to hear what you do to plan out your next year’s plans & goals.

Remember to plan your life so you live beautifully.

Use the quiet spaces in the month to plan ahead and define your goal timelines.

About Me

Hi! I'm Tricia, the creative behind ChocolateMusings.com, I know how it feels to lose your inner muse. After years of darkness (which I call the dark ages of my life), I found my inner muse hiding in the forgotten corners of my soul, I vowed never to lose sight of her again.

Bullet journaling helped reignite the passion for art and living life again while organizing my days. I also discovered modern calligraphy and watercolor. Since then, my use of the bullet journal system has evlolved and I call it 'creative planning'. Here on the blog, I show you how to use your planner to ignite your inner muse and explore creativity and art while staying beautifully organized and living a joyful life.

I invite you to grab some good chocolate and dive into my musings. Let’s ignite your inner muse.

Read more on the about me page. You can also find my policies and disclosures here.
