Supplies

All you need to doodle is a pencil and some paper, but if you want to outline your drawings with a pen, use an archival pen so it doesn’t smudge when coloring. Keep in mind that you need to let the ink completely dry even when using an archival pen. Sometimes it’s a couple of minutes or it might be more. It really depends on the pen & the paper you’re using.

I drew all of these in pen because it’s easier to see in the picture examples, but I would draw them in pencil first and then finish off with pen & coloring.

Crayola Supertip markers are some of my favorites to color with because they have such a variety of colors, and they are relatively inexpensive. But you can use colored pencils, Tombow markers, or anything else you have on hand or leave it uncolored if you want.

Archival Pens I Recommend:

These are archival pens I’ve personally tried out and use. I always recommend doing some experiments on your pen test page in your notebook to see how long it takes for each pen to dry.

  • Winsor & Newton Assorted 5-Pack Fine Liners – my personal favorite is .3 mm
  • Zebra Zensations Assorted 6-Pack – again I reach for the .3 mm width pen
  • Sakura Micron Assorted 6-Pack – I usually switch from the 02 (.3mm) & 03 (.35mm) pens
  • Copic Multiliner Assorted 9-Pack – this one also has my favorite width of .3mm
  • The Pigeon Letters 3 Pack Assorted Monoline Markers – which come in .25mm .35mm & .45mm

Back-to-School Art Doodles: How to Draw a Pencil

The pencil doodle is one of my favorites! And you can customize it in so many ways.

  • Start by drawing two parallel lines
  • Then add a point where you connect the two lines with diagonal lines.
How to Draw a Pencil Part 1 - Back-to-School Doodles for your Bullet Journal | ChocolateMusings.com #BTS #backtoschool #doodles #backtoschooldoodles
  • Add curved lines to separate the body and show the sharpened part of the pencil and a curved line for the lead.
  • On the other end, add thin rectangles at the end of your first parallel lines
  • Then add shorter parallel lines for the eraser.
  • Cap it off with an oval or curved lines for the eraser.
  • Add some additional lines down the center of the pencil
  • Finish it off by coloring your pencil sketch.

You can see that I added a little darker color on the left-hand side of the pencil. This shows that the light is coming from the right-hand side. You don’t have to add shadows, but they add a little dimension to the drawing.

Back-to-School Doodles: How to Draw a Chemistry Flask

Since most flasks are see-through, you will have to show the outside and inside of the container.

  • The top opening is an oval with a lip, so start by drawing an oval inside another oval.
  • Once you draw your top ovals, add parallel lines down from the center oval, but don’t extend them too far.
  • Draw the curve of the bottom of the flask. If you’d rather draw a larger oval you can do that in pencil. Sometimes it’s helpful to follow the same curve as the top oval as they have similar shapes.

Note: The bottom of the flask is another oval, but that oval won’t connect all the way through. This is when it’s helpful to draw with a pencil so you can erase unnecessary parts before inking in your doodle.

  • Connect the bottom oval and the parallel lines with two diagonal lines.
  • If you didn’t draw this line initially, add the second curved line showing the inside bottom of the flask. I usually don’t connect the bottom lines, but you can if you want!
  • Finally, you can add measurement lines and color the flask. You’re done with this fun back-to-school doodle!

Back-to-School Doodles: How to Draw a Clipboard

Idea: use this clipboard art doodle for the notes section in a weekly planner spread or as the day/date indicator for a week.

  • Start by drawing a rectangle, but don’t close off the box at the top middle (or draw in pencil and erase later).
  • Then draw a short line on the inside near the top for the clip part.
  • Add a curve in between the unconnected lines at the top.
  • Add two curved lines to connect your center curve to the straight line and add a circle at the top.
  • Include some details like paper (or several sheets stacked on the clipboard). Draw the sheets of paper under the clamp, but on the inside of the clipboard.
  • Finish off your adorable clipboard with color or details!

Back-to-School Doodles: How to Draw a Ruler

You might not think about sketching a ruler since usually, it’s one of the tools you use to draw! But you could use this doodle in so many ways in your planner or bullet journal. Add curved edges instead of hard, rectangular edges, and adding the metal tip as you find on some wooden rulers, it really dresses up this little back-to-school doodle!

  • Start with horizontal parallel lines
  • Add vertical lines to the ends of the two original lines.

Tip: If you want curved corners, don’t connect the two sets of lines and draw little curves before connecting them.

  • Add a longer set of marks then add shorter lines between each of those long lines to create measurements.

Optional: If you want the metal tip, add a thin line to the top and connect it to your ruler.

  • Finally, color away! You don’t have to stick with the traditional brown if it doesn’t go with your color scheme!

Back-to-School Doodles: How to Draw an Open Book

I have to admit that this is one of my favorite back-to-school doodles. And you could use it as part of a reading log if you wanted, as well.

  • Start out your doodle with three vertical parallel lines. The centerline is the middle of the book.
  • To make the pages, draw a curved line on the top and bottom connecting your parallel lines.
  • Curve up near the center and curve down on the edge, similar to a slight S turned on its side.
  • Add a curved line for the spine of the book at the top and bottom of the center.
  • Draw two more vertical parallel lines on the outside of the book.
  • For the next step, add the outside box for the cover.
  • Add additional curved lines to add more pages to the book, following the original lines.
  • Color in your doodle!

This one may take some trial and effort to get the page curves and the cover to look right. But once you do, I’m sure you’ll find some excuses to use this sketch in your planner!

Back-to-School Doodles: How to Draw a Sticky Note

Aaaah the sticky note or Post-it ® note. I use these all the time in my planner, not just the doodle, but the real thing. Where would we be if we didn’t have sticky notes? You can answer that if you like, but I’m just being silly.

This sketch is one of the easiest, and it has ample space to write in, so you can use the area for so many options in your planner!

  • Start out by drawing a square and leave the bottom right corner unfinished. (Of course you can draw in pencil and erase it later)
  • Next draw a diagonal line connecting the two corners (see step #3). I went out of order from the illustration below. It’s easier to draw the diagonal line first then draw curved lines.
  • Now add two very curved lines to a point showing the page is curving up.
  • Erase any unnecessary pencil marks and color it in if you wish!

I hope you’ve enjoyed some of these back-to-school doodles and will try them out in your planner! I’d love to see your creations, post on Instagram, and tag me @ChocolateMusingsCreates. Here are some other recommended posts you might enjoy!

10 Easy Halloween Headers in Your Bullet Journal + Video Tutorial

October 3, 2019 2 Comments

Easy Halloween Header & Doodle Ideas for your Planner or Bullet Journal | ChocolateMusings.com #halloween #doodles #headers

Here are some Bullet Journal Halloween headers to include in your planner. I hope you’ll try some of these easy to create headers – including spiderweb, bat wings, pumpkin, leaf, cauldron, bone, Frankenstein, witch hat, broom, candy wrapper or moon Halloween headers.

You can use any of these easy Halloween headers on your monthly calendar, weeklies not to mention throughout the month as your daily headers. Substitute the word ‘October’ to suit your bullet journal or planner.

For all of these headers, I started with the word “October” written out, then doodled around the text. I always recommend drawing in pencil then lining with a pen afterward.

Watch the Video to See How I Create Each of these Easy Halloween Headers

Skip to the easy Halloween header at the time stamps listed below! Click on the link to jump to that section on the page. Save a pin to your Pinterest board for later!

  • Spider Web: 0:08
  • Leaf: 1:00
  • Broom: 2:06
  • Candy: 3:11
  • Frankenstein’s Monster: 3:57
  • Witch’s Hat: 4:56
  • Cauldron: 5:50
  • Moon + Clouds: 6:56
  • Bones: 7:44
  • Pumpkin: 8:19
  • Bloopers: 9:12

Bonus: Bat Wings

Bullet Journal Easy Halloween Header: Spider Web

How to Draw Easy Halloween Headers in your Bullet Journal - Spider Web | ChocolateMusings.com #headers #halloween #howtodraw #spiderweb

The spider web header is effortless to create – create the symmetrical design, so it’s mirrored on both sides, or on just one part.

Start by drawing a straight, horizontal line on either side of the word. Add slanted lines on the top and bottom of each section. Connect the individual straight lines with bowed line strokes that look like parentheses. Add little spider details to make it extra creepy & you’re done!

Bullet Journal Halloween Header: Leaf

Bullet Journal Headers - How to Draw a Leaf | ChocolateMusings.com #howtodraw #leaf #bulletjournal #headers

Absolutely one of my favorite bullet journal headers. In fact, I made a weekly spread a couple of years ago using only leaves.

Start with your header text then draw a curved line on either side of the word. Add the outside of the leaf using curved lines for the base and add jagged lines to show the shape of the blade slowly tapering to the point of the centerline. Add another line for the stem and erase any extra marks.

Color your leaf header or ‘leaf’ it as is. #sorrynotsorry for the pun.

Bullet Journal Halloween Header: Witch’s Broom

How to Draw Easy Halloween Headers in your Bullet Journal - Witch's Broom | ChocolateMusings.com #headers #halloween #howtodraw #broom

Tip: Add a little extra room to the right for this bullet journal Halloween header!

Draw two horizontal lines around your header text – longer than the bone or Frankenstein’s monster headers. Use a c shape to connect the end on the left side. On the right side, add several curved lines to attach the broom to the handle.

To add the broom, draw two curved lines going out from the handle. Tie the bristles together by adding vertical stripes near the end of the broom. Add uneven strokes to show the bristles at the end.

Tip: You can see in the video I had to scoot my broom over because I didn’t leave enough room for the bristles. Make sure to leave extra room on the right side for this doodle! But it’s super easy and fun once it is done!

Bullet Journal Halloween Header: Candy Wrapper

Bullet Journal Headers - How to Draw a Candy Wrapper Header | ChocolateMusings.com #howtodraw #candywrapper #bulletjournal #headers

Create this sweet, easy bullet journal Halloween header by drawing one parenthesis shape on either side of the header words. Then add a couple of curved lines to make the plastic look twisted.

Like the spider web header, draw lines out at an angle from either side. Connect those two sets by drawing an uneven, random set of lines on either side. Add some extra details to make it look more candy-wrapper-like, and you’re done!

Bullet Journal Halloween Header: Frankenstein’s Monster

How to Draw Easy Halloween Headers in your Bullet Journal - Witch'sFrankenstein's Monster | ChocolateMusings.com #headers #halloween #howtodraw #frankenstein

This Frankenstein bullet journal Halloween header would look so cute with a green background!

Just like you’ll see with the bone header, start by drawing two horizontal lines on either side of the Halloween header. At the ends of the lines, draw two small ovals to connect the original lines.

Add smaller detail lines to make it look like the wood knobs sticking out of Frankenstein’s monster’s neck. You can add a curved line and add ‘stitching’ on top to make it look like a scar.

Easy Bullet Journal Halloween Header: Witch Hat

How to Draw Easy Halloween Headers in your Bullet Journal - Witch's Hat | ChocolateMusings.com #headers #halloween #howtodraw #witchshat

Leave some extra room at the top for this hat! Start out by drawing two lines like the base of a triangle. Then connect the top and bottom with straight or slightly curved lines. Add a wrinkly triangle at the top with the top of the hat bent down, so it looks floppy. I do this by creating most of the triangle then drawing a straight horizontal line. The point of the hat is aimed down and is a smaller triangle.

Before you put on the brim, it could pass for an elf hat!

Complete the look by adding a ‘c’ shape at the bottom for the brim and adding extra lines inside the main hat area to make it look wrinkly.

Bullet Journal Halloween Header: Cauldron

How to Draw Easy Halloween Headers in your Bullet Journal - Witch's Cauldron | ChocolateMusings.com #headers #halloween #howtodraw #cauldron

For this header, you’ll need a bit of extra room at the bottom, so make sure to leave the room!

Start this Bullet Journal Halloween Header by drawing two ovals around the words. Then add a large bulb at the bottom. Add a rectangle on the side of the pot and two curved lines around the basin to create the handle. Add three boxes at the bottom of the cauldron to form legs.

To make the inside of the pot look full of liquid, add another curved line inside the pot. Additional details like bubbles floating and popping around the cauldron create a fun scene!

Instead of one curved handle, you could add two handles on either side like I did when I created a bubbling cauldron in my 300 Drawing Prompts book.

Bubbling Cauldron - 300 Drawing Prompts | ChocolateMusings.com #drawingprompts

Bullet Journal Halloween Header: Moon & Clouds

How to Draw Bullet Journal Headers: Moon | ChocolateMusings.com #howtodraw #bujo #headers #moon

In the video, you’ll see another way to create this bullet journal header – substituting the moon sliver with a full moon!

Start by adding two connected curved lines for the moon. Then draw bouncing scalloped edges to make clouds. Draw as many clouds as you like to create a spooky scene.

Done!

Bullet Journal Halloween Header: Bones

How to Draw Easy Halloween Headers in your Bullet Journal - Bones | ChocolateMusings.com #headers #halloween #howtodraw

Create this super-simple header by drawing two horizontal lines on either side of the header text. Connect the lines by drawing two sets of C shapes to make the end of the bones.

DONE!

Bullet Journal Halloween Headers: Pumpkin

How to Draw a Pumpkin Header in your Bullet Journal or Planner | ChocolateMusings.com #pumpkin #howtodraw #fall #halloween

For this Bullet Journal Halloween header, use the letter C as your guide. The pumpkin sections are each made of backward and forward ‘c’ shapes connected together. Since part of the pumpkin is behind the header text, draw lightly with a pencil then darken later with a pen.

Start with one of the inner pumpkin sections. Draw a ‘c’ then draw a backward ‘c’ and connect them. Then add two more ‘c’s for the extra pumpkin sections. Draw two curved lines at the top for the stem. Complete the stem with a triangle or an oval. Add some additional lines on the stem to make it look textured. Fill in the lines with a pen and erase any extra pencil marks. One of my favorites!

I had some fun with this one – skip to the end of the video for pumpkin bloopers!

Bonus: Bullet Journal Halloween Header: Bat Wings

Idea: Color the bat wings with a light gray and darker accents once you’re finished doodling for a fun effect!

How to Draw Easy Halloween Headers in your Bullet Journal - Bat Wings | ChocolateMusings.com #headers #halloween #howtodraw #batwings

Start the bat wings by drawing two downward curving lines, then add another line under it and connect the ends. Make the bottom of the batwing by drawing reversed scalloped edges. Add lines in the negative space connecting the point to the two curved lines at the top, and you’re done!

Which (or should I say Witch) is Your Favorite?

Which bullet journal Halloween header is your favorite? I can’t decide, but I really like the leaf and the spider web. The candy is pretty sweet too….

I hope you’ll try some of these headers in your planner or bullet journal. If you do, tag me on Instagram @ChocolateMusingsCreates. I’d love to see your creations!

How to Draw Mummy Text + 2 bonus ways to use this technique

October 19, 2017 3 Comments

How to Draw Mummy Text

How to Draw Mummy Text great for bullet journaling & planner headers video tutorial with complete step-by-step walk-through

I created a mummy! No, I am not Dr. Frankenstein creating a monster or an Egyptian of old preparing a Pharoah for the afterlife. Nothing like that. I just created mummy font. An easy way to create a Halloween lettering effect without having to be fancy schmancy. In the video, I give you the how to draw your own mummy text with a step-by-step method of lettering mummified words with hints, tips & tricks.

Enjoy!

Here are some tips from the video:

#1 Font Tip:

You will lose detail from your word sketch, do not use a font with a lot of details.

#2 Font Tip:

Start with a thicker-font type (Arial Black is what I used for inspiration for the initial text) – that way you can show more great mummy details!

#3 Mummy Tip

Use different shapes such as triangles going in opposite directions to create variety in the wrapping.

#4 Mummy Tip

Add some rectangles in the mix of the triangles to create variety

#5 Mummy Tip

Start in different corners to give even more variety

#6 Mummy Tip

Extend your ‘wrappings’ beyond the lines of your sketched text to make it look bulky like a bandage

#7 Mummy Tip

When going around corners or curves, think of that time you hurt your knee or elbow and wrapped it with that bulky ace bandage? Think about how it stretched around your knee or elbow and bunched up in the crook of the inner part of your elbow. Do the same thing with the triangles around the curves.

#8 Tying it off

Like toilet paper trailing after an unsuspecting person exiting a public bathroom make it flow like a ribbon. You could also connect two letters together with a single ribbon connector instead of ending each one separately like I did.

Use the mummy text effect for drawing other doodles in your planner

#9 Bonus Techniques for Drawing the Mummy Text

Use this in other ways like wrapping the stems of flowers for a rustic bouquet or making a sweet, swaddled baby for celebrating at Christmas time or when a new baby arrives in your life.

#10 Super-Speedy Version of the video

This super-speedy version is the perfect size to share!
