Hello Fall! I’ve missed you! I created a fun way to show my love for the fall season for this month’s creative challenge.

You might notice that there are more prompts than days in the month – no, I didn’t lose track. To create a proper bingo board for the Fall Challenge this month, I needed to have the same number of rows & columns. So, instead of taking away some prompts, I decided to add to the list! Of course, the big perk of a bingo board is that you can choose the prompt for the day. Extra bonus points for filling in the entire bingo sheet.

What to Do & Ideas for Creating

Here are some ideas to get you started with this challenge creating using these fall-themed words.

Paint a Christmas card or a fall scene to hang in your home for the season. Use the challenge word as a background for your art or lettering. You can always use art as an overlay for your other creations. Try to create as many as you like or spend a few days experimenting with a particular word.

Create monograms with the various fall words painted or drawn embedded as a design or create an overlay for another design like squares or circles.

What I Love About Creative Challenges

What I love about creative challenges like this fall words challenge – even if you happen on this challenge after it’s posted and finished on Instagram, there’s nothing keeping you from using these prompts to create later on.

Using a combination of daily and style prompts is one of my favorite ways to experiment and try new styles. A few years ago, when I started to handletter, prompts like this got me to try flourishing when I never would before.

Use this fall words challenge to look at color, patterns, and values, and add a bit of flair to your projects.

Happy creating, and remember to have fun!

First on the Fall Bullet Journal Theme Ideas: Leaves & Trees!

I can’t write about fall theme ideas in your bullet journal without mentioning fall foliage and all the leaves shapes.

It seems that nearly every year, I do a colored leaf-themed bullet journal in the Fall. I’m not mad, but I am surprised. Fall really is my favorite season! I went back through all of my journals to find fall 2018, and I have a gap between the end of one book, August 2018 and November 2018. Oh well! I guess I make up for it by having two in 2017.

September 2017 – Fall leaves weekly – still one of my favorite spreads, and it makes me want to use more colored pencils.

November 2017 – Aspen Forest Welcome Page

November 2019 – with bright colors and semi-dutch door feel on the monthly. Maybe I should try this again. I really like the effect.

September 2020 – Acrylic markers blended from green leaves to fall colors for a beautiful effect.

  • Leaf Wreaths
  • Leaves falling
  • Leaf Piles
  • Multi-Colored Leaves
  • Quaking Aspen Forest
  • Tree Branches

I feel like Forrest Gump. I could go on and on. By the way, if you like puns, ‘leaf’ is an excellent start to a pun-tastic fall bullet journal theme. I’ll just ‘leaf’ that idea right there. I’m sure you could blow me away with all your colorful puns. Don’t let these ideas dry up. I really should stop now.

Suppose you’re looking for more ideas for an autumn theme. Keep reading. I promise there are so many good ideas.

Second on the list for Fall Bullet Journal Theme Ideas: Apples!

Of course, you are free to choose your theme but remember you don’t have to include only images of apples. For instance, a few years ago, I created a bullet journal spread with signposts and apple buckets as though I was in an apple orchard.

  • Apple Orchard
  • Apples
  • Apple Pie
  • Candied Apples
  • Caramel Apples

In fact, here are some apple-related brain dump page names. Because I love to name my brain dump pages something other than ‘brain dump.’

Fall Outdoor Fun Bullet Journal Inspiration

My family used to attend a local ‘witches night out’ around Halloween. We loved the crafts & food and witch costumes! They sponsored a fun run, as well! If you’re into running, look for any themed half-marathon or runs in your area and do them as a family.

  • Hay Bales
  • Hot Air Balloons (found on my whimsical travel theme post)
  • Pumpkin Patches (here’s a pumpkin themed weekly spread.) I don’t know about you, but sometimes I like to create my page and then add doodles later. That’s essentially what I did with that spread – substitute the pumpkins for other doodles and change it out all year.

Enhance Your Fall Bullet Journal Theme – Fall Collections

Beyond The theme in your Bullet Journal for fall, here are some great ideas for collections to include during the fall months.

Clothing & Accessories

  • Bag Wishlist
  • Bags I have
  • Clothing Size Lists for Family
  • Coats I Own
  • Fall Outfits
  • Ideal Outfit
  • Sweaters I Own (list colors/patterns)

Keeping a list of clothing items that you currently own sounds like a great way enhance the nostalgia when you flip back through your bullet journal. When you start including snapshots of your life, it brings a sense of who you are at that very moment and keeps that time as a memory. It’s not just about schedules and to-do lists. It’s recording a snippet of your life. At least, that’s how I use my creative planner.

Fall Self-Care Practices

  • Bath Bombs to Try
  • Self-Care List
  • Favorite Shops
  • Favorite Coffee Houses/Diners
  • Things that Motivate You

I know during the fall, life gets busier, schedules take over, and sometimes self-care suffers. Make a list of what you do to make yourself happy in the fall and winter months. Make sure to carry this list through winter to help prevent feeling glum.

Food

  • Bulk Cooking Ideas
  • Fall recipes
  • Favorite fall foods
  • Hot Drinks to Try
  • Restaurant Meal Menus

Here’s a post on recipe tracking – especially when you get a new fall recipe book!

Sorry to tell you, but the holidays are on our doorstep. Now is a great time to make some lists in your bullet journal of things you need for the holidays. Get prepared early so that you can enjoy the upcoming season!

Journaling

  • Favorite Fall Memories
  • Past Halloween Costumes for you or your kids

I love to keep a list of past fun in my book. Wouldn’t it be amazing to have a list of all your kid’s yearly Halloween costumes? The thing with this type of list is that you don’t have to sit down and compile it all at once. Add to it as you remember or as Facebook memories remind you. I can’t believe that I’m going to thank Facebook for something, but here we go, thanks Facebook for the memories!

Sports

  • Football dream team
  • Football Tracker
  • Soccer

I know I’m missing more sports-related trackers during the fall. What other fall sports would you track in your bullet journal?

Color Inspiration for your Fall Bullet Journal

  • Oranges, reds, purples
  • Tans, browns, and yellows
  • Deep reds like burgundy
  • Transitions from green to yellow to red and finally purple

I love the color of mulled cider and cinnamon. There are more than one reasons why I love fall, and the colors don’t disappoint. I adore the rich, vibrant colors associated with fall foliage and the autumn season.

From bright orange pumpkins to the deep rustic orange of mulled cider. Golden yellow, tan, and brown present their rich, flavorful hues during the fall months. Dark Reds like burgundy paired with dark purples lend comfort and a sense of warmth.

September Week 1: Autumn Colors and Fall Leaves

August 31, 2017 Leave a Comment

Keeping with the monthly theme of “Heck Yes! It’s Fall!” September’s 1st week has an autumn look with the changing colors on the leaves.

See the September monthly spread here

I knew when drawing this out, that the leaves were small and wouldn’t hold a lot of tasks. Maybe I’ll just take the week off and relax. Probably not, but here in the US, Monday the 4th is a holiday, so I will just take one day instead.

I am a ‘sketch it out before painting’ kind of girl. So to create this weekly log, I found a simple leaf pattern and drew it out repeating the pattern with just slight differences. Many eraser marks later, I had just the right amount of whimsy to the branches and leaves. I labeled the leaves to make sure I had drawn enough!

Autumn leaves sketch for the weekly planner spread in my bullet journal. I can't get enough of September and Fall.

After sketching it out, I sampled some chocolate of course. Then I watercolor painted in the tree branch and the leaves. The paper tends to get wavy when I add a lot of water or paint. So I kept as much whitespace as I could. I love the whimsy of this page not to mention the fall colors. I like to fantasize about the day when I paint hyper-realistic and you can’t tell the picture from reality. But I am not that kind of painter – at least yet. This page is nowhere near realistic

I like to fantasize about the day when I paint hyper-realistic and you can’t tell the picture from reality. But I am not that kind of painter – at least yet. This page is nowhere near realistic, but I love it nonetheless for its bright hues and whimsy in the curves of the branches and leaves.

Even though I live in Atlanta and it is still dreadfully hot, I think I need to sip a cup of hot cocoa in honor of this page. Fall here I come, ready or not because I am gearing up for cooler weather, crisp nights and a school schedule for my kids.

Tag me on Instagram (@ChocolateMusingsCreates) with your fall creations or weekly layouts. I would love to see your creative muse at work.

Here’s my process for creating this page in a super speedy video. Enjoy!

I just noticed that I have a pen mark on my left hand from when my kids couldn’t get a ballpoint pen to write. Ah well. The things you do for kids.

A pile of gathered leaves and Autumn inspiration await you. Jump right in!

September Set Up

August 29, 2017 3 Comments

Hello, September.

How I’ve missed you.

Fall is a time that gives me the…well warm fuzzies. Even though September is not yet full-on fall, there is a certain deliciousness that comes with the crisp nights and cooling weather, the warm hues all over the tree tops as the autumn colors dot the horizon. The reds, oranges, yellows, soft browns, and PURPLE! Purple is a fall color I swear.

Apple strudel is definitely on the menu. I don’t care if I have to eat the entire pan by myself because no one else in my family likes it. I wouldn’t say that is necessarily negative, I consider it a perk.

September feels like a great time to cuddle up with a fuzzy blanket and read a book.  I thought maybe I could have this Monthly Intro Page do double duty as a book tracking page (I’ve also heard the page called monthly cover page/splash page/monthly greeting or welcome page) whatever you call this “Hello September” page, I love the way it turned out. I added touches of iridescent watercolor paint after coloring with Papermate Flair Pens and using a water brush for blending.

As with most pages that I paint, I get caught up in the artwork and want to keep it for the beauty of the art. I don’t want to write on it! We shall see if I decide to deface the cover page and turn it into a reading tracker.

See how pretty that paint is? It shimmers.

Sigh.

Monthly Page Layout:

This month, I shrunk the size of the day’s boxes and am adding a smaller habit tracker fto the side of the page. Another reason I love fall is the return of a regular schedule. Don’t get me wrong. I love summer for the freedom it allows, but fall provides needed structure in my life (and my children’s lives!).

Blending Tombow Dual Brush markers has fascinated me. I’ve seen it all over instagram – so I tried it. Surprisingly, I really like the color combination of the orange #933 and the purple #636. I plan to write in black so scaling the numbers up in the day boxes and using them as a ‘background’ was perfect.

I wanted more fall colors and leaves. Lots of leaves. I never realized how hard leaves were to draw! Using a variety of the Papermate flair pens, I drew out basic leaf shapes (you can see my pencil marks) and filled in with colors and used a water brush to blend the colors. The flair pens don’t blend completely, but I really like the look it gives in this case. On some of the leaves, I went back and outlined them again.

The return of the habit tracker

Since fall is the return of schedules, it is the return of the neglected Habit Tracker to my bullet journal. Using the space on the right-side of the page, I added a baby-step tracker filled with only the essential items. Habits that I truly need to form {or break!}. As you can see, there are a lot of personal-development items on my habit tracker. It’s time to get my personal life back into shape!

For creating an effective habit tracking:

  • Here is a post on how to set up a habit tracker
  • 4 things to do to supercharge your habit tracking

I am rather pleased by the colors and the layout for September. I added the washi tape for goals and the ‘to do’ section quite by accident. They are actually covering a hand-lettering mistake. The tape is sparkly orange and I wrote on it with a white “Recollections” opaque marker that I found at Michael’s in the loose pen aisle. I mark the monthly spread pages with washi tape for easy navigation. I added the white dots to the lettered titles too. I like the texture it gives and gives the text even more whimsy.

I wasn’t intending to add leaves to the boxes on the calendar, but it became necessary as I smeared the ink on number 13. I can’t tell, nor do I care because I like the added leaves! The number 25 may need some of the same help. Or maybe I should fill that day with plenty of fall activities that I will never know otherwise.

How do you fix errors on your page? Washi tape? Art? Stickers? Just leave it? Bullet journaling has taught me that it’s ok to make mistakes and to love them for what they are. Let me know what you do in the comments below.

Here’s to September, the beginning of a new season. A time to embrace what comes and to reignite the flame for schedules and planning.

About Me

Hi! I'm Tricia, the creative behind ChocolateMusings.com, I know how it feels to lose your inner muse. After years of darkness (which I call the dark ages of my life), I found my inner muse hiding in the forgotten corners of my soul, I vowed never to lose sight of her again.

Bullet journaling helped reignite the passion for art and living life again while organizing my days. I also discovered modern calligraphy and watercolor. Since then, my use of the bullet journal system has evlolved and I call it 'creative planning'. Here on the blog, I show you how to use your planner to ignite your inner muse and explore creativity and art while staying beautifully organized and living a joyful life.

I invite you to grab some good chocolate and dive into my musings. Let’s ignite your inner muse.

Read more on the about me page. You can also find my policies and disclosures here.
