Supplies

All you need to doodle is a pencil and some paper, but if you want to outline your drawings with a pen, use an archival pen so it doesn’t smudge when coloring. Keep in mind that you need to let the ink completely dry even when using an archival pen. Sometimes it’s a couple of minutes or it might be more. It really depends on the pen & the paper you’re using.

I drew all of these in pen because it’s easier to see in the picture examples, but I would draw them in pencil first and then finish off with pen & coloring.

Crayola Supertip markers are some of my favorites to color with because they have such a variety of colors, and they are relatively inexpensive. But you can use colored pencils, Tombow markers, or anything else you have on hand or leave it uncolored if you want.

Archival Pens I Recommend:

These are archival pens I’ve personally tried out and use. I always recommend doing some experiments on your pen test page in your notebook to see how long it takes for each pen to dry.

  • Winsor & Newton Assorted 5-Pack Fine Liners – my personal favorite is .3 mm
  • Zebra Zensations Assorted 6-Pack – again I reach for the .3 mm width pen
  • Sakura Micron Assorted 6-Pack – I usually switch from the 02 (.3mm) & 03 (.35mm) pens
  • Copic Multiliner Assorted 9-Pack – this one also has my favorite width of .3mm
  • The Pigeon Letters 3 Pack Assorted Monoline Markers – which come in .25mm .35mm & .45mm

Back-to-School Art Doodles: How to Draw a Pencil

The pencil doodle is one of my favorites! And you can customize it in so many ways.

  • Start by drawing two parallel lines
  • Then add a point where you connect the two lines with diagonal lines.
How to Draw a Pencil Part 1 - Back-to-School Doodles for your Bullet Journal | ChocolateMusings.com #BTS #backtoschool #doodles #backtoschooldoodles
  • Add curved lines to separate the body and show the sharpened part of the pencil and a curved line for the lead.
  • On the other end, add thin rectangles at the end of your first parallel lines
  • Then add shorter parallel lines for the eraser.
  • Cap it off with an oval or curved lines for the eraser.
  • Add some additional lines down the center of the pencil
  • Finish it off by coloring your pencil sketch.

You can see that I added a little darker color on the left-hand side of the pencil. This shows that the light is coming from the right-hand side. You don’t have to add shadows, but they add a little dimension to the drawing.

Back-to-School Doodles: How to Draw a Chemistry Flask

Since most flasks are see-through, you will have to show the outside and inside of the container.

  • The top opening is an oval with a lip, so start by drawing an oval inside another oval.
  • Once you draw your top ovals, add parallel lines down from the center oval, but don’t extend them too far.
  • Draw the curve of the bottom of the flask. If you’d rather draw a larger oval you can do that in pencil. Sometimes it’s helpful to follow the same curve as the top oval as they have similar shapes.

Note: The bottom of the flask is another oval, but that oval won’t connect all the way through. This is when it’s helpful to draw with a pencil so you can erase unnecessary parts before inking in your doodle.

  • Connect the bottom oval and the parallel lines with two diagonal lines.
  • If you didn’t draw this line initially, add the second curved line showing the inside bottom of the flask. I usually don’t connect the bottom lines, but you can if you want!
  • Finally, you can add measurement lines and color the flask. You’re done with this fun back-to-school doodle!

Back-to-School Doodles: How to Draw a Clipboard

Idea: use this clipboard art doodle for the notes section in a weekly planner spread or as the day/date indicator for a week.

  • Start by drawing a rectangle, but don’t close off the box at the top middle (or draw in pencil and erase later).
  • Then draw a short line on the inside near the top for the clip part.
  • Add a curve in between the unconnected lines at the top.
  • Add two curved lines to connect your center curve to the straight line and add a circle at the top.
  • Include some details like paper (or several sheets stacked on the clipboard). Draw the sheets of paper under the clamp, but on the inside of the clipboard.
  • Finish off your adorable clipboard with color or details!

Back-to-School Doodles: How to Draw a Ruler

You might not think about sketching a ruler since usually, it’s one of the tools you use to draw! But you could use this doodle in so many ways in your planner or bullet journal. Add curved edges instead of hard, rectangular edges, and adding the metal tip as you find on some wooden rulers, it really dresses up this little back-to-school doodle!

  • Start with horizontal parallel lines
  • Add vertical lines to the ends of the two original lines.

Tip: If you want curved corners, don’t connect the two sets of lines and draw little curves before connecting them.

  • Add a longer set of marks then add shorter lines between each of those long lines to create measurements.

Optional: If you want the metal tip, add a thin line to the top and connect it to your ruler.

  • Finally, color away! You don’t have to stick with the traditional brown if it doesn’t go with your color scheme!

Back-to-School Doodles: How to Draw an Open Book

I have to admit that this is one of my favorite back-to-school doodles. And you could use it as part of a reading log if you wanted, as well.

  • Start out your doodle with three vertical parallel lines. The centerline is the middle of the book.
  • To make the pages, draw a curved line on the top and bottom connecting your parallel lines.
  • Curve up near the center and curve down on the edge, similar to a slight S turned on its side.
  • Add a curved line for the spine of the book at the top and bottom of the center.
  • Draw two more vertical parallel lines on the outside of the book.
  • For the next step, add the outside box for the cover.
  • Add additional curved lines to add more pages to the book, following the original lines.
  • Color in your doodle!

This one may take some trial and effort to get the page curves and the cover to look right. But once you do, I’m sure you’ll find some excuses to use this sketch in your planner!

Back-to-School Doodles: How to Draw a Sticky Note

Aaaah the sticky note or Post-it ® note. I use these all the time in my planner, not just the doodle, but the real thing. Where would we be if we didn’t have sticky notes? You can answer that if you like, but I’m just being silly.

This sketch is one of the easiest, and it has ample space to write in, so you can use the area for so many options in your planner!

  • Start out by drawing a square and leave the bottom right corner unfinished. (Of course you can draw in pencil and erase it later)
  • Next draw a diagonal line connecting the two corners (see step #3). I went out of order from the illustration below. It’s easier to draw the diagonal line first then draw curved lines.
  • Now add two very curved lines to a point showing the page is curving up.
  • Erase any unnecessary pencil marks and color it in if you wish!

I hope you’ve enjoyed some of these back-to-school doodles and will try them out in your planner! I’d love to see your creations, post on Instagram, and tag me @ChocolateMusingsCreates. Here are some other recommended posts you might enjoy!

Floral Wreath Bullet Journal Theme – May 2019 Plan With Me

Floral Wreath Bullet Journal Theme – May 2019 Plan With Me

Have you ever had something you really wanted to try, but never did because you were afraid you wouldn’t be good at it? Practically everything I do starts as that thought in my head. This time it was drawing flowers. I really wanted to draw flowers. Outline drawings, watercolor paintings, floral wreaths, you name it, I want to create flowers. But I collected flower drawing & reference books instead of trying. I chose floral wreaths for my bullet journal theme this month and I’m happy to say that April showers bring May flowers!

I went a little flower doodle crazy and I’m super thrilled with the way they turned out. It gives me so many ideas for the future. In a way, this whole month is minimal. I love how elegant it looks and how it turned out. I hope you find some inspiration in my floral wreath bullet journal theme this month.

Watch the Plan With Me for Some Oh-So-Satisfying Flower Doodles

What’s in My Planner This Month:

I skipped the monthly welcome page (gasp!) partially because I stared at some blank pages and didn’t know what to do at first. The other part was that I was trying to conserve pages as I thought I could get two more months out of this journal, but I realized that I neglected my brain dump pages and review pages, and those pages are essential for keeping me organized and motivated, so I got a new notebook instead of trying to cram another month in the journal.

Circle Monthly / Calendar Wheel

If you’ve been around my blog in the past, you might have noticed that I like circles. The May monthly calendar doesn’t disappoint. Built around a partial floral wreath, I created a circular May monthly log. Then because I wanted a miniature calendar, I added a flip-out page which also has color codes. Thinking I would only use the flip-out for the monthly, at first I was pleased with the idea. Then I realized I can use it for all the weeklies to follow and now I’m a little giddy. I love it when something good turns into something fantastic.

The only thing I wish is that I would have kept the colors muted or not used as much of them. So use only a stripe of color instead of coloring the box in. I don’t think this will be the last of floral wreaths, a flip-out calendar or color codes. So, there’s always next time!

If you have only a few calendar items, the monthly log either in horizontal or vertical format (like mine for last April or December) or this circular format (also known as a calendar wheel) is a really fun change to display significant dates and a high-level overview for the month.

Habit Tracker

Instead of my usual circle habit tracker, I decided to go with a block format. Just so I didn’t have two facing circles across from each other. My favorite part about this page is the leafy vine wrapping around the words. Using a Tombow Brush Pen, I was able to get the thick and thin lines just like you see in calligraphy. Unlike the calendar facing page where each line on the flowers is the same width, the brush pen gives a little more character. I’m excited to track my habits this month!

Weekly Flower Wreaths

I LOVE floral wreaths. Flowers wrapped around a circle – what could be better? Creating floral wreaths was the inspiration for the entire month, and my goal was to make each day different. #missionaccomplished

I used different pens and pen thicknesses on each of these pages. My favorite: Micron 02 .30mm and Micron 03 .35mm. I also tried a black Papermate Flair pen and a .50mm Micron pen.

Tip: if you decide to watercolor the flowers, make sure you use an archival pen (like the Micron pens, not the Papermate Flair pen) if you ink before watercoloring. Otherwise, your black outlines will blend with your watercolors. And make sure the ink is completely dry before watercoloring. You can use the Papermate Flair pens after the watercolor is absolutely dry.

Miscellaneous Pages

Social Media Planning

I added a new page to the month – a social media planning page. Believe it or not, I have a lot more images I want to share each month than I post here or on my Instagram page. I create something a little special for Random holidays like Pick Strawberries day or Waffle Day and it never fails, I forget to share them!

All the Things

My journal page/memory keeper spread for the month. I love filling in details of the adventures we have as a family, what I learned & created for the month and other good things.

Seeds of Thought

The last page in my monthly pages is my brain dump page. I love coming up with names for brain dump pages that tie to my theme. For instance, February was a pirate theme & I called my brain dump spread “X Marks the Thought”. So this month, I called it “Seeds of Thought”.

I’m so excited to track and do all the things for the month of May. I love creative planning/bullet journaling because I can customize it and use it as a learning tool each month. I think you might see florals in the future. The moral of the story is, don’t let your mind convince itself that you can’t do whatever it is you want to do before you’ve even tried it.

I hope I’ve given you some ideas & inspiration to dress up your planner or bullet journal and try drawing some flowers & floral wreaths.

Wishing you joy and creativity every day - Tricia

Weekly Layout – Mini Time Block + Pumpkins & Mummy Text

October 21, 2017 4 Comments

Simple Weekly Horizontal Spread with Mini-Time Block with Pumpkins & Mummified text

It is nearly the end of October! What happened? This month went by faster than September! This month has had some ups and downs. I think I take on too much emotionally. I internalize everything. Journaling has helped me overcome this and get me out a slump or help me pull myself back up and keep moving on. I created a simple weekly horizontal spread with a larger place for daily ‘to dos’ and a small area for time-blocking.

This spread focuses focus on just the area of time that I am struggling with – the evening time, which is when I do a majority of my blog/video work. I find that if I am slipping into a slump of some kind simplifying gives me freedom, which reignites my creativity. This is a HUGE reason why I am an advocate for my bullet journal. I have the flexibility to change things week-to-week or even day-to-day based on what I need.

Weekly Horizontal Bullet Journal with mini-time blocking and cute pumpkin doodles

Last week I tried to time block my whole day but left little room for those pesky ‘to dos’ that creep up but don’t need a time-slot. If I start using dailies, I think that weekly overview of the time blocks would be more beneficial. I haven’t made the leap to using a daily planner yet.

Ways to use the time block

In the video, I thought I might write the tasks assigned to the time block below, using brackets to designate the tasks for the block of time. But I could instead use color to appoint blocks of time assigned to a task. Hmmm.

Right side weekly spread view, pumpkin details and time blocking are sure to warm up that inspiration

Cohesive Weekday Plans and Off-the-Cuff Weekends

I start my weeks on Monday if nothing else to make my weekends look larger. But I like having my weekdays together – it makes things feel more cohesive. A little section for meals, general ‘to dos’, fill up what might be considered the un-scripted bottom part on the left page.

Saturday and Sunday nestle nicely together. I do not time block those days – we do lots of family things like going to the park or playing frisbee outside or in the cul-de-sac or building the tallest Lego tower ever so Lego Batman can scale to the top of the table or going to QT (QuikTrip – a local gas station that has fun drinks!) that are completely unscripted and usually spur-of-the-moment type activities. Sometimes, we just sit and watch a movie. Often times, my little girl (who is turning 6 tomorrow! – what???), will ask me to show her my art for the week and she will try out my techniques. She saw my ‘mummy video’ (see the post here on how to create mummy text) and immediately tried it out.

If I have errands or events, I will jot them down in the Saturday/Sunday slots – but those days usually stay pretty clear.

I created a video of my set up for this week. Watch the video below or on my YouTube Channel here. Don’t forget to like and subscribe for future videos.

Mummy Text and Script Hand Writing

I discovered that making Mummified text was so much fun – and completely appropriate for the nearing holiday, I added some mummy text to the weekday names.  If you missed it, here is the tutorial for making mummy text or mummy pumpkins or mummied mummys. Whatever you wish to mummify.  The orange washi tape is to mark my monthly calendar (see the set-up here). I love the sparkle!

Doodle Details

I love the days written over the top of doodled pumpkins and the swirls of the green vines on the pumpkins below. Just enough whimsy and doodle to keep the page interesting, but give enough space to write and plan and all the things.

Overall

Overall I love this Simple Weekly Horizontal Spread. It has enough space to plan and create and enough function to accommodate schedules.

How to Draw Mummy Text + 2 bonus ways to use this technique

October 19, 2017 3 Comments

How to Draw Mummy Text

How to Draw Mummy Text great for bullet journaling & planner headers video tutorial with complete step-by-step walk-through

I created a mummy! No, I am not Dr. Frankenstein creating a monster or an Egyptian of old preparing a Pharoah for the afterlife. Nothing like that. I just created mummy font. An easy way to create a Halloween lettering effect without having to be fancy schmancy. In the video, I give you the how to draw your own mummy text with a step-by-step method of lettering mummified words with hints, tips & tricks.

Enjoy!

Here are some tips from the video:

#1 Font Tip:

You will lose detail from your word sketch, do not use a font with a lot of details.

#2 Font Tip:

Start with a thicker-font type (Arial Black is what I used for inspiration for the initial text) – that way you can show more great mummy details!

#3 Mummy Tip

Use different shapes such as triangles going in opposite directions to create variety in the wrapping.

#4 Mummy Tip

Add some rectangles in the mix of the triangles to create variety

#5 Mummy Tip

Start in different corners to give even more variety

#6 Mummy Tip

Extend your ‘wrappings’ beyond the lines of your sketched text to make it look bulky like a bandage

#7 Mummy Tip

When going around corners or curves, think of that time you hurt your knee or elbow and wrapped it with that bulky ace bandage? Think about how it stretched around your knee or elbow and bunched up in the crook of the inner part of your elbow. Do the same thing with the triangles around the curves.

#8 Tying it off

Like toilet paper trailing after an unsuspecting person exiting a public bathroom make it flow like a ribbon. You could also connect two letters together with a single ribbon connector instead of ending each one separately like I did.

Use the mummy text effect for drawing other doodles in your planner

#9 Bonus Techniques for Drawing the Mummy Text

Use this in other ways like wrapping the stems of flowers for a rustic bouquet or making a sweet, swaddled baby for celebrating at Christmas time or when a new baby arrives in your life.

#10 Super-Speedy Version of the video

This super-speedy version is the perfect size to share!
