What Does August Mean to You?

I sure love the smell of a freshly sharpened pencil bouquet and newly opened chalk and erasers. Don’t you relish the sight of all those chiseled markers in various colors ready to call attention to reading, writing, and math questions? Where we live, August is the start of a brand-new school year. And we start early in the month, the first Monday!

I love school supplies partially because they go so well with my notebooks. But I have always loved them. I worked for an office supply store for a long time, and people knew to ask me questions about pens and paper because I was passionate about them. If you have a favorite pen or are picky about your notebook, then you know what I mean.

You can check out my list of favorite lettering supplies or bullet journal supplies in these posts.

New Schedules = Second Chances?

August also signifies the start-up of new schedules for the coming months for us. It’s almost like a second chance at the year! No matter when you start the school year here’s an opportunity to add some fun to your calendar with the random holidays for August.

Holiday Categories

I certainly don’t include all the Random Holidays for any given month, so you’ll find a list of websites at the bottom of this post that you can search for additional holidays that suit your family. I also created a Google Calendar, which is shared for free. Included underneath the calendar are instructions on how to add the calendar to your view. You can toggle it on and off, so it doesn’t clutter your regular schedule.

I like to break the Random Holidays into sections like food, outdoors, and other holidays. I hope you find something (or a few) to celebrate this August!

Week/Month Long Celebrations

Simplify Your Life Week. Now this is a week I can get behind. Use the time to refocus and declutter. Though we often think of ‘things’ to declutter NationalDayCalendar.com suggests decluttering anything (not just objects) that causes stress or anxiety. I’m definitely going to start with a list of things I can either eliminate or reduce in my life.

What are some ways you could simplify your life?

Be Kind to Humankind Week. Last Week in August. The touching story of why Lorraine Jara was inspired to create this week really hits home. How often have we ignored an opportunity to be kind to others? It’s one of my life goals to be more kind.

Random Food Holidays in August

2 – Ice Cream Sandwich Day
3 – Watermelon Day
4 – Chocolate Chip Cookie Day
6- National Root Beer Float Day – are you an ice cream or root beer first when creating this tasty recipe?
10 – S’ mores Day
18 – National Fajita Day – Yum! This is one meal my family doesn’t argue (too much) about when I fix it. I guess I know what’s on the menu tonight!
20 – National Lemonade Day
24 – Waffle Day
25 – Banana Split Day
29 – National Lemon Juice Day – when life gives you lemons, what do you make?

We love waffles in our house, so even though waffle day is celebrated more than once in the year, we don’t miss it! I know what we are having for dinner on the 24th.

Celebrating with food is the easiest way to highlight the day. Although I love to doodle or paint food, so making something to represent it is always an option!

What’s your favorite joke? We have silly ones in our house that the kids made up but don’t make any sense. Whether you tell a joke on the 16th or not, you could record the silly jokes your kids used to say or write some down in your journal.

In 2021, Japan will celebrate this holiday on the 9th instead of the 11th to coincide with the end of the Summer Olympics.
16 – Roller Coaster Day
30 – Beach Day
31 – Eat Outside Day

Images of lighthouses are some of my favorites, with the surf crashing against the side and the light shining true no matter what. It is absolutely one of my favorite images. I know I need to celebrate lighthouse day by pinning some spectacular lighthouse images & maybe painting a few.

I think that Happiness Happens Day is a perfect day to include in this random holiday calendar! According to the National Day Calendar, this day was founded in 1999 by the Secret Society of Happy People. They identified 31 ways to be happy. Check it out and see how many ways you enjoy being happy.

Which Random Holidays Will You Celebrate in August?

I hope you found some inspiration this August to celebrate some random holidays or to make something creative to break up the monotony of the day-to-day. That’s my goal with these random holidays every month. When I look back, I want unique memories that last instead of looking back and figuring out where the time went.

Be sure to add some fun days to your bullet journal or planner. It’s the only way I remember to celebrate.

Random Holidays – Google Calendar

After celebrating different holidays for over a year, I decided to create a Google Calendar to see all the holidays I’d love to celebrate. It makes it easy to share creations, words, and ideas on social media and with friends and family. The best part about Google calendars is that you can toggle them on and off when you don’t want to see them.

If you click on the calendar item, it has a link to the source & relevant hashtags! I’m always evolving this calendar – and I will add calendar days or corrections all the time.

Tip: The calendar will show the current month, you can navigate to the month of your choice by using the arrows or dropdown.

If you want to add my calendar to your Google calendar:

  • Go to your Google calendars and click the + next to other calendars
  • Choose ‘add other calendars.’
  • Then click Subscribe to Calendar
  • After that, paste the text below in the “add calendar.”
  • Toggle the schedule on and off when you want to access it – that’s what I do.

chocolatemusings.com_q316ucpnldal611fs2q2nnk7v0@group.calendar.google.com

I won’t list all the random holidays, but just the ones that work with ChocolateMusings.com – so, of course, you’ll see a lot of food, art, creativity & some miscellaneous holidays are thrown in as well.

Don’t you think that we all could need some random holidays to celebrate this July? I don’t know about you, but I know I need to take control of something in my life because it feels like everything is out of control. The only thing that I know that I have control over how happy I am – because I believe that happiness is a choice.

But choosing to be happy is tough some days! I’ve found that adding some random holidays to your monthly calendar helps create an excuse to be happy even when it’s tough.

This July, we have some fun random holidays to look forward to celebrating. Food days like lollipop day or junk food day are destined to provide a good laugh. By the way, I’d love to know which holidays you celebrate! Leave me a note and let me know which ones you added to your schedule.

Teach Yourself to Look on the Bright Side with Random Holidays

Teaching myself to look on the bright side of life isn’t easy! That’s why I decided to start celebrating random holidays. Celebrating a silly holiday is an excellent way for my family to smile and laugh. Like always, I choose to feature silly or food-related holidays, and of course, creative days! But there are many more random holidays that you could add to your calendar.

I invite you to choose some random holidays this July and add them to your calendar. You’d be surprised how adding little snippets of fun to your schedule improves your mood.

July is a special month for me – it’s my birthday month! I have a goal to focus on being happy and seeing the good this month. The other goal I have is to come up with as many puns as I can related to these July random holidays.

It sure seems like we celebrate a lot of ice cream-related random holidays during June and July. Not that I’m complaining about the ice cream. On the contrary, I think whoever designated these holidays was very wise, and we should have more ice cream random holidays. If you like ice cream, check out my June Plan With me, it’s all about ice cream.

Side note, if you want to find out about the holiday’s origins, check out the links below, I link to each website source. And there are a lot more random holidays to celebrate, more than my little featured selection.

June Random Holidays – Add Some Fun, Creative, & Random Holidays to Your Calendar

June Random Holidays - add some fun, creative, & random holidays to your calendar | ChocolateMusings.com #junerandomholidays #randomholidays #celebrate

Summer is in full swing when the month of June hits our calendars. At least where we live. School schedules are quickly forgotten, but I love to add some June random holidays to celebrate to our calendar.

The holidays in June don’t disappoint, either. I love to separate the listed random holidays into different categories, as you can see below.

At the bottom of the post is a Google Calendar I created, which I share for free that includes my chosen random holidays. Don’t worry, I also included instructions on how to add the calendar to your view. You can always toggle it on and off, so it doesn’t clutter your regular schedule.

I certainly don’t include all the Random Holidays for any given month, so you’ll find a list of websites at the bottom of this post that you can search for additional holidays that suit your family. You can also check out the monthly archives.

The Random Holidays for June are separated into different sections like food, outdoors, and other holidays. I hope you find something (or a few) to celebrate this June!

Random Food Holidays in June

2 – Rotisserie Chicken Day – what’s your favorite chicken recipe? Mine is a good Chicken Salad recipe. Throw it on a croissant and I’m in heaven! Now, If only I could get my kids to eat chicken salad sandwiches.
3 – Egg Day
8 – Name Your Poison Day
11 – Corn on the Cob Day
17 – Eat Your Vegetables Day
22 – Onion Rings Day
29 – Waffle Iron Day

I know there are at least three random food holidays I plan to celebrate this June: corn on the cob day, eat your vegetables day and waffle iron day.

My kids LOVE vegetables, and that includes corn on the cob. Favorite veggies in our house are corn, cucumbers, steamed carrots, & lots of roasted vegetables like broccoli and asparagus. What are some of your favorites?

Anytime I have an excuse to do breakfast for dinner, I take it. The kids are also huge fans of waffles (well, two of them are, anyway). What better way to celebrate waffle iron day than plan dinner around this random holiday?

You could also paint some delicious-looking waffles to celebrate. I did that, too. When I was out west visiting family, we found a fun waffle chain called Waffle Luv. And boy, oh boy, did they have good waffles. I wish I could celebrate waffle iron day with them.

June Random Holidays to Celebrate Outdoors

Sometimes I need an excuse to go outside. I’m sure you know the feeling, it’s easy to stay inside after work and watch tv. These are a few excuses to get you outside and get you laughing. If not outside, then these June Random Holidays are excellent subjects for painting or doodling.

1 – Go Barefoot Day

I won’t list all the random holidays, but just the ones that work with ChocolateMusings.com – so, of course, you’ll see a lot of food, art, creativity & some miscellaneous holidays are thrown in as well.

May Random Holidays – 2020

Here are your May 2020 Random Holidays! With the current global situation happening right now, I think it’s even more important to find reasons to celebrate randomly. I think it’s essential to break the rut of playing on our devices or watching endless TV and create or find those nuggets of joy hiding in plain sight.

At the bottom of the post, you’ll find other suggested ways of celebrating. I hope some of them will give you inspiration or ideas to include these holidays in your life.

The Beginning of Random Holidays

I started celebrating random holidays with my family over a year ago. We started celebrating to add little more joy to our everyday lives. It seems like we live for the weekend, and it always went by far too quickly. Most weeks or months were a blur, and we didn’t remember anything specific.

We never stopped to smell the roses.

I don’t know about you, but I want to have moments in my life that stand out. Ones that I remember and my kids will bring up and we can laugh about when they are grown.

After finding a few random holidays to celebrate, I decided that I couldn’t be the only person who longed for more reasons to celebrate. I decided to introduce random holidays on my blog to help families stop for a bit to create memories within their families.

What We Did in April to Randomly Celebrate

In April, we celebrated ‘wear pajamas to work day‘ (in fact, we wore pajamas every day that week). I think it’s safe to say that many people celebrated that day whether or not they knew about it since so many people are working from home. If you’re working from home, did you celebrate ‘wear pajamas to work day’? I think the more important question is – if you’re not working from home, did you observe that day?

My kids planned all week to celebrate with our cat, Baghera (named for the black panther in the Jungle Book), on National Pet Day. They wished they could celebrate early before the ‘official’ day on the calendar. I love their enthusiasm and, of course, told them that they could celebrate early and longer than on the schedule.

May 2020 Random Holidays List

There are so many holidays to choose from! You are welcome to explore and find more holidays to suit your family’s taste.  Here are the highlights for my May 2020 random holidays list. I think they messed up on the sequence of lost sock memorial day and clean your room day. I believe that they should switch the two and not have a memorial until after you know for sure it’s lost. Haha!

Food Holidays

First of all, I love featuring food holidays. So I find as many as I can to showcase, here. Do me a favor (flavor?) if you find any other food holidays, leave a comment below. I’d love to add more to the list. It’s not just about eating all the food, sometimes it’s fun to paint or doodle food instead. All I know, is that food holidays create a bond with others and I’m happy to enhance that bond.

Admittedly, cleaning is a necessary evil. Of course, we could just not clean. But I don’t think we want to live in squalor or have the option to hire a maid (I SO want to hire a maid!). So why not celebrate while cleaning?

10 – Clean Your Room Day #CleanUpYourRoomDay
18- National No Dirty Dishes Day #NoDirtyDishesDay

Random Days Just for Fun

I remember getting the newspaper and looking for the funnies on Sunday mornings (does that show my age??). My husband still reads comics every day online. I tried to create a comic in my bullet journal once, and honestly, I’d love to create more. Do you have a favorite cartoon?

Other Random Holidays to Celebrate in May

The theme in my bullet journal is space/planets since we are celebrating not only Star Wars Day but Astronaut Day, I think the theme is perfect for this month.

When I was reading the different random holidays for May, at first, I thought, “why do we need a day to celebrate paperclips?” But then I realized that I have so many paperclips nestled in my drawer. And the thing is, they are not just regular paperclips! They are pretty, and so I should celebrate them!

1 – Mother Goose Day #NationalMotherGooseDay
4 – Star Wars Day #StarWarsDay
5 – Astronaut Day  #WeBelieveInAstronauts & #NationalAstronautDay
12 – National Odometer Day #NationalOdometerDay
20 – World Bee Day #WorldBeeDay

What Days Will You Celebrate?

After reading through the random holidays listed, which days do you plan on adding to your calendar? Are there any you could sneak in and surprise your family with a little treat or fun activity? Even if it’s making paper airplanes on the 26th with your kids, that’s randomly celebrating.

Here are a few that we will celebrate. Can you guess which ones? Leave me a comment below with your answers.

Ways we are going to celebrate Random Holidays in May | ChocolateMusings.com #sillyholidays #holidays #random

Like celebrating a birthday, these insignificant days might just become the joy that your family looks forward to every year.

Whichever days you choose to celebrate, I hope you find that these moments add joy to your life. After all, that is my goal: to spread a little bit of joy here and there to overworked and tired families so you can see a glimmer of hope in your lives.

Need Some Ideas for Creating Using Random Holidays as Your Inspiration?

That sounds fun. Here are some ways you can be creative!

  • Letter the name of the holiday (want to learn to hand letter? Here’s where to start handlettering.)
  • Write it in funky fonts (check out this post for ideas.)
  • Take a picture (I heard selfies are a thing 😜).
  • Doodle the holiday
  • Paint a picture of the holiday or you celebrating the holiday.
  • Write a blog post or journal entry.
  • Create a planner spread.
  • Create a color palette inspired by the holiday.
  • What imaginary character or Disney Princess would most likely celebrate this holiday?
  • What colors should we choose for this holiday?
  • Make a favorite dish or create a new recipe in honor of the day.
  • If the holiday had a mascot, what would it be?
  • Don’t let my ideas limit you. Find something that inspires you, and create!

If you don’t create anything – spend the time with your family or friends! It’s all about creating a better, more fulfilling life. I believe these silly, random holidays help add a little smile to your face and a bit more laughter to your days. Choose to add joy to your life.

January Random Holidays

Random Holidays: Create Pockets of Joy - January 2020 | ChocolateMusings.com #randomholidays

I hope that part of your goal-setting for this year includes taking time for you and your family. Add some of these January Random Holidays to your schedule and start creating moments you’ll cherish. Don’t forget to check the bottom of the post for the calendar link so you can easily add the holidays to your calendar.

Add Pockets of Joy

Creating pockets of joy, snippets of celebration regularly helps slow the rush of time and pauses the fast-forward effect we all encounter. Since time seems to be moving at an all-time high speed, I decided to create a calendar of all the Random Holidays I wanted to celebrate every day.

Some random holidays seem goofy or silly but it creates a bond for our family. For instance, we celebrated #SarcasmAwarenessMonth for October. Anytime we would say something silly or sarcastic, everyone would say ‘Sarcasm Awareness Month!’. For younger kids, it helped teach them the difference between seriousness and joking.

We celebrate my black cat, named Baghera on October 29th (Black Cat Day). She gets a special kitty treat that day, which my kids love to give her.

January Month-Long Random Holidays

Check out the history of some of these Month-long Random Holiday Celebrations. The story of the Black Diamond intrigued me, so of course, I had to include it in my list of celebrations. As an advocate for creativity and hobbies, it was only natural to include both holidays. What hobbies or creativity do you hope to focus on this year or month?

Fire up the Crock-Pot and let’s get going!

  • National Black Diamond Month #BlackDiamondMonth
  • National Hobby Month #NationalHobbyMonth
  • Creativity Month #CreativityMonth
  • National Slow Cooking Month #SlowCookingMonth

  • 31st – National Backward Day

January Random Holidays – Hobbies/Creativity

I guess most of the random holidays could be considered a hobby or lead to creativity, but what I would love for you is to find a hobby you enjoy and work at developing it. Create a challenge for yourself, whether you set a goal for 365 days, a month, or a week, work to build your creativity. Here are 5 easy steps to develop a new skill.

I find that when I think creatively, it builds on itself and develops further. But if you find yourself in the middle of a creative slump, check out this post.

About Me

Hi! I'm Tricia, the creative behind ChocolateMusings.com, I know how it feels to lose your inner muse. After years of darkness (which I call the dark ages of my life), I found my inner muse hiding in the forgotten corners of my soul, I vowed never to lose sight of her again.

Bullet journaling helped reignite the passion for art and living life again while organizing my days. I also discovered modern calligraphy and watercolor. Since then, my use of the bullet journal system has evlolved and I call it 'creative planning'. Here on the blog, I show you how to use your planner to ignite your inner muse and explore creativity and art while staying beautifully organized and living a joyful life.

I invite you to grab some good chocolate and dive into my musings. Let’s ignite your inner muse.
