New Year Bullet Journal Setup 2021

January 7, 2021 Leave a Comment

New Year, New Bullet Journal Setup 2021

Here’s a sneak peek of how I’m setting up my unconventional* bullet journal starting with the new year. I’ll give you a hint: this bullet journal setup is almost a throwback to when I decided to use a collections notebook plus a planning notebook. That was back when I loved the Leuchtturm notebooks – so it’s been a while.

Even though I’ve moved on from off-white, thin, ghosting pages synonymous with the Leuchtturm notebooks to sheets with bright white and thicker pages, I still haven’t moved on from trying new things in my planner.

Starting a New Year in a New Notebook

Starting a new year is always exciting. New planners and accessories line the shelves of stores. Pens and highlighters call out your name. It’s ok to admit that you like them. A new year sends all the good vibes of ambition and the flick of a pen inking in new goals.

I love starting a new year with a new bullet journal setup and I’m excited to tell you all about what my plans are for this year.

The Quest for Planner Peace

Many people search for ‘planner peace’ trying to find the perfect layout to use forever and henceforth. I discovered that my version of “planner peace” means I can change everything and try something new.

The fact that I can switch from a page covered in watercolor to a page so minimal I could post using the hashtag #minimalistbulletjournal (and feel like I belong) is a testament to the variety I love in the bullet journal.

Though I love my Tumbitri Meri notebook, I decided to start the new year with a new bullet journal set up. I will likely buy another Tumbitri Meri notebook in the future – they have a lovely number of pages. And they stand up pretty well to the amount of watercolor, markers, and doodles I love to include in my bullet journal. If you’d like to read the review or watch the review video, check out this post.

Collections in a Separate Notebook

This year, I decided to keep all of my collections in a single notebook. That way, I could keep a yearly tracker for various items and not have to recreate it when I inevitably run out of space. If I’m keeping a collection notebook, why not try something entirely different for the pages serving as my second brain (aka planner)?

Don’t worry, I’ll explain what I did for my planning part of the notebook below.

A collection of collections in my bullet journal - list of collection spread ideas for my bujo | ChocolateMusings.com

What Do I Keep in My Collections Notebook?

Suppose you’ve never kept a collection notebook, oh my. You’re in for a treat. A collection is a page, spread, or multiple pages dedicated to a topic. If you plan a vacation, you might have a vacation planning spread filled with things to do, places to see, packing lists, etc.

So far in this new year’s bullet journal collection setup I have:

  • A page for inspiring quotes
  • More collection ideas
  • Goals & Goal Trackers
  • Unfinished projects
  • Home repairs
  • New Home Wish List (because we want to move to a new house soon).
  • Yearly Trackers (Like the 365-Day Project tracker)
  • Blog Post Ideas & other inspiration and brain-dump like pages for my blog.
  • Pen Test Pages & Other Reference Pages (such as flower reference books or Tombow Marker color reference chart)
  • Meal Planning
  • Local Deals & Events
  • Home Repair Collections Log in my Bullet Journal | ChocolateMusings.com

What About the All-Essential Planning Notebook?

For the planner part of my notebook, I created 12 books – one for each month of the year. Yes, you read that right, TWELVE different notebooks. You also read it right. I created them. I decided to piece together a book using watercolor paper.

12 Watercolor Notebooks - One for each month of the year - Bullet Journal Experiment | ChocolateMusings.com

How To Keep Track of Future Events? Why a Future Log is Essential

Separating each month into a different notebook introduced a new problem – how do I handle upcoming events for the year? Where do I keep a record of future month’s appointments. As it turns out, all I needed was a future log set up at the front of my collection notebook.

I keep the yearly log to record future events and calendar items. I then record all events in the respective month (after I’ve finished creating all the pages, of course). When it’ time to move on to the next month, I refer to the yearly log and more on. This new year’s bullet journal set up is no different than years past because I would create one month at a time.

This is why I include a future log no matter what type of bullet journal set up I have.

Techniques & Resources for Creating Individual Notebooks

If you’re curious about the techniques I used, I found a Skillshare video on creating notebooks. If you sign up for the free trial at Skillshare, you can watch it for free. And then, I watched this lovely video on YouTube to learn additional sewing/binding techniques.

Using this bookbinding supply starter kit, I quickly got the hang of making the books, and I’m so happy to say that they are all sitting on my shelf waiting for each month. After creating several books, each one took me about 30 minutes from start to finish.

Blank watercolor bullet journal set up - supplies and new yearly setup | ChocolateMusings.com

Why Separate Notebooks for Each Month?

I figure each book will be a study on different techniques and themes. Of course, in watercolor. And I’m looking forward to it.

Additionally, I’ve even left pages at the end of the book for additional doodles and creative perusing. I find that when I lay down a blank sheet of watercolor paper with the intent to create a masterpiece, I freeze. But give me a bullet journal (in whatever form), and that all changes for some reason. I figure that if I mess up, I can just turn the page.

I hope that when you’re setting up a new bullet journal for the new year (or whenever you start a new notebook), you give yourself the grace to turn the page. Life isn’t about being perfect. It’s about learning and doing.

When writing this post, it’s not even January yet, and I have half the year sketched out just waiting for the paint. I have to say that I’m looking forward to every one of them. The kicker is that I’ve created them out of order based on what inspires me. (Shhhhhh! Don’t tell the planner police.)

  • May – Loose Watercolor Roses (incredibly the first time I’ve ever done these, and now I’m hooked)

Summary – New Year, New Bullet Journal Set Up

I’m so excited to try out this new method for my bullet journal set up this year and look forward to painting, doodling, and filling up each page. Maybe this year, I won’t have my inspiration leave for months at a time. Like it did in 2020.

Who knows if I’ll do the same thing for next year? I don’t. Right now, I’m thrilled with my new year’s bullet journal set up, unconventional* as it may be. But unconventional never held me back anyway.

Planner Question:

Do you do anything unconventional* in your bullet journal?

* The term and therefore judgment of an ‘unconventional bullet journal’ is for fuddy-duddies who don’t like to experiment and be a unique person. I use the term simply to convey an uncommonly used technique

How to Create (and Use) One Line Per Day in Your Bullet Journal

September 17, 2020 Leave a Comment

Have you ever looked at the One Line Per Day Bullet Journal Spreads and wondered why (or how) to use this journaling page? I’ll show you how to create a One Line Per Day spread, how to create the habit of using it. I’ll also give you some ideas if you’re not sure what to write.

For me, the One Line Per Day is a stepping-stone habit. Meaning I start with something small to get to a bigger habit. In this case, writing in a journal every day.

How to Create (and Why to Use) a One-Line Per Day Journal in your Bullet Journal | ChocolateMusings.com #onelineperday #oneline #journal

When you want to create a habit of daily journaling, it’s hard to develop the practice. I usually end up with a bookshelf full of books with one page filled. Even Monica from Friends made fun of Rachel quoting from Rachel’s journal, saying she was going to write in her diary every day, but every page was blank after the first entry. If you’re with me (and Rachel), starting with a ‘One Line Per Day’ method might help change the empty notebook syndrome.

How to Create a One Line Per Day Page

I’m a sucker for fancy headers. If a page has a fancy header, I’m more likely to use it. In this case, I lettered the title using a brush marker. Simple yet fancy.

  • Using a fancy title makes the page more appealing to use & easier to find as you flip through your bullet journal | ChocolateMusings.com #handlettering #moderncalligraphy #bulletjournal
  • One Line Per Day Handlettering | ChocolateMusings.com #oneline #handlettering #moderncalligraphy

Check out this post if you want more ideas to creating fancy headers (and no, they don’t all require brush markers. BUT if you are interested in learning how to do modern calligraphy, check out my books.)

My goal is to use one line per day and stick to only one line.  That’s a challenge in and of itself (at least for me). So I used 1-31 stickers, so I didn’t have to number the page (because I cannot number in a straight line no matter how hard I try!). If you have the talent to write numbers in a straight line, number away.  Or you can use a ruler to the side so your column doesn’t drift back and forth as mine would.

You could leave the page like this or, for an added detail, highlight every other line with a highlighter, Mildliner, or even a Crayola marker. I recommend using a ruler to highlight.

Highlight every other line on your page with a marker or highlighter | ChocolateMusings.com #bulletjournal #collections #journalingpage

Once you’ve created the page, now it’s time to make sure that you write in it every day. Don’t stress yourself out. Write a word, a mood, or a short quote for the day.

Supplies I Used to Creat My One Line Per Day Insert

Crayola Marker Bouquet - Color Combination for August's Theme | ChocolateMusings.com
  • Tumbitri Meri A5 Dot-Grid Journal | Blog Post Review | YouTube Review Video
  • Pentel Sign Brush Pens
  • Archer & Olive Paper Pads
  • Crayola Super Tip Markers
  • Scotch Washi Tape (for taping the page to the book – you can also use clear tape)

What If You Use a Pre-Printed Planner or Have no Room for Another Page?

If your planner is pre-printed, insert a page, or attach it to your regular planner with a paperclip. Don’t anticipate picking up a journal every night before going to bed. I guarantee you’ll start skipping days.

I love the idea of removable pages. Because if you successfully create this habit and do it for a straight year, what a great memento for the year! Oh, now I want to do it just for that reason.

What If You Forget to Fill Out Your One Line Per Day?

Completed one line per day journal entry page in my bullet journal. It feels so good to see all those lines filled out! | ChocolateMusings.com one line per day, journal entry, journaling, bullet journal

Here is my completed one line per day. Do you want to know a secret? I missed a day more than 30% of the time. But I went back and completed the lines. In a year or two, when I’m rereading this, honestly, I won’t care that it wasn’t done every day at 9 pm.

So, if you forget to fill it out, think about a time in the day when you pull out your planner. Then at the time when you open your notebook, quickly write your one line for the day.

If you use your planner for work, once you arrive at your desk and start flipping through the pages, take a moment to write down your one line per day.

If you find yourself looking at a few blank lines on your One Line Per Day, fill it out! I find that if I work backward (start with yesterday, then move to the day before). I can remember more details than if I were to begin with “what happened two weeks ago?” You can always look back at your calendar to jog your memory as well.

Other Ways To Use Your One Line Per Day Journal Page

Who says one line has to sum up the day? It could be a motivating thought for the day or a goal to accomplish. You could fill it out for the previous day in a moment of reflection. Whatever you do, you’re trying to create a habit of everyday use, so make it easy to fill out your one line every day.

One Line Per Day Journal Ideas - don't know what to write? Here are some ideas for short one-line entries in your bullet journal | ChocolateMusings.com #bulletjournal #journaling #onelineperday

Ideas to Record

  • Short Journal about the Day
  • One word describing your mood or day
  • Motivational words for the coming day
  • A goal you want to accomplish
  • Inspiring Quote
  • Statistics from a day (it’s still writing, isn’t it?)
  • Names to Pray For
  • Something you Observed
  • A shortlist of things you did
  • Reminders
  • Good things about yourself (this is hard to do sometimes, but Is very beneficial when trying to combat any negative self-talk)
  • Something your children did (funny, sweet, etc.)
  • Favorite item of the day
  • Shows you watched
  • Books you read & how many pages
  • What you did to work towards a goal
  • How many times you (add something you’re tracking)
  • Things you love in your life
  • Things you want to try
  • Podcasts you listened to
  • Today I learned
  • Happy moment of the day
  • Dinner Conversations
  • Guilt-Free Moment
  • What I did for self-care
  • Accomplishments
  • What to do Better

You could use one idea or any combination of these ideas. What other ideas would you like to record daily?

One Line Per Day – A Great Starting Point

If you’d like to start journaling, but it feels overwhelming, try starting with one line per day. Make sure to designate a time (for example, before you turn out the lights before bed or as you’re having a cup of coffee in the morning to write your one line. Then strive to do it every day. If you miss a day, complete it the following day. No big deal.

Check out this post for two things I do every night before I go to bed that just might help you create the habit of writing in a one-line per day journal. These small things changed my life. (It seems dramatic, but it’s not – it’s true!)

June Plan With Me – Ice Cream Theme + Video

June 7, 2020 Leave a Comment

Bullet Journal for June Ice Cream Themed Plan With Me | ChocolateMusings.com #planwithme #icecream #bulletjournal

June Plan With Me: Bullet Journal Ice Cream Theme

Welcome to June’s plan with me – Where the theme is ice cream! I can’t tell if I’m more thrilled with the result or enjoyed the process more. Whichever it is, I am excited to share a bit of my process and the fun ice-cream related artwork for June’s plan with me.

When I decided on ice cream for this month’s theme, I envisioned a lot of sparkling glasses of ice cream with perfectly shaped scoops and delicious-looking flavors popping off the page. However, when I sketched it out, I kept drawing the scoops falling towards the glass or falling on the ground. One of my weekly pages has only cones and my brain dump page, well, that one features either a lucky seagull or an unlucky ice cream lover.

I’m not sure if it’s the unrest with the world that made drawing the ‘ideal’ or ‘perfect set’ of ice cream spreads difficult, or if it was just a particularly rough day when I sketched it all in. All of the spreads have a certain quirky quality. Regardless, I love the outcome and can’t wait to share them with you. All I can hope is that they will bring a bit of joy to your day.

The Plans This Month

How I plan is different, lately. I don’t include a lot of structure or boxes. Instead, I use open space and fill it with what I need that week such as journal space or doodle areas or note-taking.

My planner isn’t all about aesthetics. Although, getting excited to open the book because of the ice cream theme doesn’t hurt. I use it functionally, and that’s part of the reason why I like to include plan with me posts on this blog.

I know a lot of people ‘just aren’t into planning right now,’ but it is one thing that I need to remain constant in my life. Planning is a habit I’ve worked hard to establish, and one that I don’t want to have to work hard to re-establish once we start returning to ‘normal’ whatever that means.

Watch the Plan With Me Video

Habits and Goals

One habit I know I need to re-establish is my weight loss goal & efforts. I was doing so well with tracking my eating habits and weight loss for so long. Then I kind of just fell out of practice and have been chasing that wagon begging to hop back on ever since. Maybe I shouldn’t do ice cream planner themes to help get back on track. (Thankfully, I don’t crave ice cream since starting on this theme any more than I did beforehand.)

Have you kept on track with any weight loss or exercise goals this year? I’d love to know what you’ve been doing. Starting to track my food intake and using/finishing my monthly habit trackers is something I’ll include as part of my mid-year goals and on my habit tracker.

I love having an overview of the month where I can see scheduled items or events. Besides keeping a high-level overview of the month, I’ll keep a few notes on this page and a few critical to-dos. But mostly, my to-do lists stay on my weekly spreads.

Habits/Goals

The ice cream cone on this page says it all for how I’ve been doing this year. So the quote on this page says, “It’s ok if you fall. But not if you stay there”. Since June is the middle of the year, I decided to make a page dedicated to reassessing my goals and picking myself back up from the train wreck that has been the first half of the year. I’m sure you know what I’m talking about.

Banana split journaling page in my bullet journal - follows the ice cream theme perfectly! | ChocolateMusings.com #bananasplit #journaling #writeitdown

Journal Page

Though I leave a lot of room on my weekly pages (especially over the last few months) for journaling, I wanted to have a page specifically dedicated to family memories. The good things that I see, the experiences we have. I find that if I look for the good, I see it. The effect is the same if you look for the bad. This is my page to look for the good.

I can’t tell you how pleased I am with this banana split page. Using masking fluid, I literally sprinkled the page, anticipating where to paint in the sprinkles. I used this effect in April, but this month’s plan with me was definitely smaller-scale when it came to masking fluid.

Bullet Journal Weeklies Sweet Treats - Ice Cream Sundae Plan With Me | ChocolateMusings.com #bulletjournal #icecream #weeklies

Weekly Pages

Other than one week with a vertical, one-page layout, the rest of the weeks use a simple design where I split the page top to bottom with various ice cream-related illustrations. Throw in a few motivational quotes for week’s spreads, and I’m delighted with the outcomes.

  • It's ok if you fall, but not if you stay there. Bullet journal handlettered quote | ChocolateMusings.com #bujo #bulletjournal #handlettering
  • Top off your day with something good. Ice cream themed bullet journal handlettered quote | ChocolateMusings.com #handlettering #lettering #quote
  • How will you fill your days? Bullet Journal Quote | ChocolateMusings.com #bulletjournal #quotes #handlettering

Planner Quotes Used:

Surprisingly most of these quotes relate well to ice cream and getting motivated.

Goals Page:

Its okay if you fall. But not if you stay there.

Empty Ice Cream Cones Weekly:

“How will you fill your days?”

Slowly Consumed Popsicles Weekly:

“Do something great, finish what you start.”

Note: I tried to use a different kind of brush pen to get the rough textures for this quote, and it just didn’t end up working out as I wanted. But it’s ok. I finished it.

Ice Cream Topping Weekly:

“Top off your day with something good.”

A great reminder to focus on the good.

Brain Dump: Last Page in the Ice Cream-Themed Plan With Me

I might have to retitle this page to “What was I thinking?!” instead of “delectable ideas, aka MINE.” 10 points if you get the reference for the aka title. I like how it turned out, and maybe I’ll be careful this month about guarding these delectable thoughts against hungry predators.

If you’d like alternate names for a brain dump page, check out my post featuring 150+ alternatives.

I hope you’ve enjoyed my ice cream themed plan with me, and it gave you a bit of inspiration. Even though it didn’t turn out to what I expected in my head, I think the fun, whimsical designs express a bit of the chaos that we are all living with and will (hopefully) elicit a smile in some form or fashion.

What I’m looking forward to this month:

Setting some goals & getting back on track are two things I look forward to doing this month. I hope to record the good things in life, even if it’s enjoying the silence after the kids go to bed or the smell of gardenia on an evening walk. I intend to write all my feelings. It’s been hard to express myself in the past few months, but I think if I write it down, I might resolve some of the other creative blocks.

Happy planning!

Let me know what you think and what your most significant challenge to plan is for you.
