10 Things You Can Learn from a Blank Notebook

10 Things You Can Learn From a Blank Notebook

Hint: These 10 things you can learn from a blank notebook isn’t just about journaling. There’s a lot of good life advice in here, too.

Starting a new notebook feels so refreshing. The smell and feel of the paper. The crackle of the spine as you crack open the notebook for the first time. Thumbing through the book, the feeling of the crisp pages calling for attention. Ahhh, it feels so good to start fresh. I opened a new notebook today, which made me think about how these pages apply to our lives. So I’d like to share 10 things you can learn from a blank notebook.

Tip #1: The First Thing You Can Learn From a Blank Notebook:
Your Past Notebooks Don’t Make Your New Notebook

Your Past Doesn't Determine Your Future - Advice From a Blank Notebook Tip #1 | ChocolateMusings.com #lifeadvice #blanknotebook #bulletjournal

No matter what you’ve written (or done) in the past, this notebook can be different.

Your past notebooks do not determine what you can do with your new book. Learn from the past, decide what you want to do, and go confidently in that direction. I’m sure you can see many parallels between this suggestion about a notebook and your life. I’ll leave it at that.

#2: You Have Limitless Possibilities

10 Things to Learn from a Blank Notebook: You Have Limitless Possibilities | ChocolateMusings.com #lifeadvice #possibilties #motivation

You have limitless possibilities. And you have full control of all your choices in life. Just like the pages in your notebook, what you record in the journal of your life is up to you. Try lots of new things and then practice, practice, practice. Don’t get discouraged if it’s not perfect the first, second, or hundredth time. Keep going.

The Inevitable Thing to Learn When Starting a Blank Notebook – Tip #3:
You Will Make Mistakes. Accept Them or Fix Them.

Life advice from a blank notebook: you will make mistakes. Fix them or move on. | ChocolateMusings.com #lifeadvice #blanknotebook #potential #bulletjournal

You’ll make mistakes. But it’s usually how you handle the errors that make the most significant difference in the future. Sometimes starting over is the answer. But most of the time, a mistake is minor, and you can whiteout over it or move on.

I only started genuinely benefitting from writing in a notebook or journal when I allowed myself to make mistakes. Big mistakes will happen, as well. But most of the time, even big blunders can be fixed by just turning the page.

See #5 if you feel like you can’t fix it by turning the page.

#4: Turn The Page. Really. Just Turn the Page.

Life advice - Turn the page. | ChocolateMusings.com #lifeadvice #bulletjournal #moveon

The mistakes you make won’t seem as significant after you’ve turned a few pages. Other people won’t remember your mistakes as you do. In fact, most people are so worried about themselves that they won’t remember your mistakes. Forgive yourself and learn from them.

#5: Starting Fresh is OK, Too. Move On If You Have No Other Choice.

Starting fresh is ok, if there is no other option. | ChocolateMusings.com - Things you can learn from a blank notebook #bulletjournal #bujo #startover

If you feel you ruined the whole notebook, get a new journal, and start fresh. In all reality, if you spilled coffee all over the book and don’t feel like you can salvage any of it, here’s the thing: you can start over. I’m giving you permission.

When you decide to move on, take a deep breath, go to Target, Walmart, or Amazon, and get yourself a new notebook. Or create your own book. Start fresh. And most importantly, MOVE ON.

#6 – Share It!

Things you can learn from a blank notebook: Share it! Share the things that are most important to you | ChocolateMusings.com #shareit #share #bulletjournal

Share what you’re most proud of. Go ahead, and celebrate your successes. However, Choose the right crowd to share with and who will lift you instead of being jealous of your happiness or accomplishments.

I know that my little planner has grown and evolved with me. It’s also helped me grow in my talents. Find a group that shares your excitement and share your progress.

#7: Things You Can Learn from a Blank Notebook:
You Don’t Have to Share Everything

Life advice from a Blank Notebook - Don't Share Everything | ChocolateMusings.com #journaling #journal #bulletjournal

In contrast to the last tip, you don’t have to post everything online. Some pages belong solely to you, and you don’t have to broadcast them. It is perfectly fine to use your notebook for personal development. You’re the one who will benefit most from it. Use your new blank notebook to your benefit. This goes for your personal life as well. Share with those you trust if you need help but don’t feel obligated to share everything.

Tip #8: Things You Can Learn from a Blank Notebook: Focus on the Good

Things to learn from a blank notebook: Focus on the good in your life and you will find more good. | ChocolateMusings.com #lifeadvice #blanknotebook #bulletjournal

Focus on the good. Dedicate pages or areas of your book so you can log the good things that happen. Life isn’t just about schedules or what you checked off your list for the day. Life is about stopping to smell those gorgeous blooming roses on your evening walk with your beloved. It’s about that sunset with all those colors that melted your heart. It’s about seeing your children play together (and not fight!).

Sometimes it’s the little things like ordering a ceramic painting palette on Amazon and admiring how careful they were to package it. And the fragile piece arrives perfectly on your doorstep, so you can immediately start painting. Record the happy moments, even if they seem small or insignificant.

From my experience, if you seek out the negative in your life, you will find it. Controversially, if you look for the good, you will see it, and if you continue to look for the good, you will more easily find it. If you write it down in your notebook, you have a chance to look back at the good and remember it.

#9: Carry Through With Your Plans

Things to learn from a blank notebook: Carry Through With Your Plans | ChocolateMusings.com #lifemotivation #motivation #deepthoughts

Carry through with your plans. I’m guilty of intending to do many things but never carrying through. I have so many dreams and ambitions, but I let fear stop me. Or I make a schedule and then ignore it.

Make the plans, then write the first step to start your journey if you’re having trouble doing them. Do the first thing, then check it off. Then proceed to the next step.

#10: Finally, the Last Tip You Can Learn From a Blank Notebook – Take Time to Reflect & Learn

Notebook before and after - Tip #10 from things to learn from a blank notebook - reflect & learn from yourself. Go through your notebooks and review what you wrote - then learn from it. | ChocolateMusings.com #reflect #learn #bulletjournal

Look back on your life. When you finish a notebook, take a moment to reflect. Enjoy the things you recorded, and use the memories of the events that bring a smile to your face to increase your joy. Share the things that matter with the people that matter to you.

I find so much insight and inspiration throughout my completed notebooks. Ideas, thoughts, quotes, joy, sadness, and all the experiences combine to create my past and shape my future.

I love looking back through the pages and am always glad I have a record of my life.

Which of These Tips Did You Need the Most?

Which of these tips did you need to hear the most? For me it was #3, #7 & #8. Sometimes I focus so much on making my notebook perfect to share that it’s not as functional as it could be. I also always need a reminder about accepting mistakes. And I can always use a reminder to focus on the good things in life.

Journaling Question:

Here are some journaling questions in the spirit of things you can learn from a new notebook. What Things Do You Love About a New Notebook? What Have you learned from a new journal?

What are Random Holidays?

Random holidays are not national holidays. Sometimes a company creates a holiday to promote their brand or product. (Like have a Coke day). Some holidays support a cause or charity. Most of the random holidays I chose for my Random Holiday Calendar are related to creativity, food, words, traveling (each state’s holiday is the day it became a state), and other fun holidays such as “International Talk Like a Pirate Day.”

At the bottom of this post, you’ll find a calendar with all of my curated Random Holidays. Don’t worry, I’ve included instructions so you can add this calendar to your Google calendar list so you won’t miss a chance to randomly celebrate! Toggle on/off the calendar as needed in your calendar list.

I hope you’ll join me in finding joy and good moments instead of focusing on worldly negativity. Choose a couple of random holidays to celebrate in the month with me and focus your attention on something that brings you joy.

Random Holiday Suggestions for Your Planner | ChocolateMusings.com

What random holidays are you looking forward to the most in October?

I know I’m looking forward to National Homemade Cookie Day, National Be Nice Day/Do Something Nice Day, No Bra Day, National Dessert Day, and of course, National Chocolate Day.

This month is also National Sarcasm Awareness Month. Since sarcasm is my native language, I look forward to celebrating that all month long for sure!

To celebrate national homemade cookie day, I thought I’d share my favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe if you can keep yourself from eating all of them, save a few and savor them on the chocolate day at the end of the month. FYI, they freeze really well as uncooked dough or after baking them.

I promise you’ll want to pin this one! Find the recipe below.

Food Holidays in October

I love to celebrate with food. In addition to homemade cookie day here are some more food holidays in October:

1- National Homemade Cookies day – see below for my favorite homemade cookie recipe.
4 – Cinnamon Roll Day
4 – Taco Day
13 – M&M Day
14 – Dessert Day
17 – Pasta Day – seriously, I love when national days make my dinner plans for me. What kind of pasta would you eat on pasta day?
18 – Chocolate Cupcake Day
21 – Apple Day
24 – Food Day – this random holiday is more than it seems. Rather than stuffing our faces full of food, it focuses on eating healthy and cutting back on unhealthy foods.
26 – Pumpkin Day – I’m not particularly eager to eat pumpkins, but I sure do like to decorate them. October is a perfect month to celebrate this decorative fruit!
28 – Chocolate Day
30 – Candy Corn Day
31 – Caramel Apple Day

If you’d prefer to celebrate all month long, satisfy your sweet tooth with National Caramel Month. If you don’t have a sweet tooth, try celebrating National Pizza Month instead.

Whether it’s the chocolate day on the 28th, or a random holiday celebrating chocolate cupcakes on the 18th, I know I’ll indulge a little in this sweet treat. There’s a reason why I named my blog ChocolateMusings.com. Though I won’t participate in Candy Corn Day (my teeth hurt just thinking about this overly sweet candy) I had to add this special Random Holiday to the October calendar for my kids. What are your favorite treats?

Creative Random Holidays in October

2 – Name your car day – what’s the name of your car?
6 – Mad Hatter Day
22 – National Color Day
25 – National Art Day / International Artists Day
28 – Animation Day

One idea to celebrate Name Your Car Day on the 2nd is to make a list of all the cars you’ve owned with their names in your bullet journal.

National Art Day/International Artists Day is on October 25th, and I’m excited to post some of my paintings on social media. Galaxy & moon landscapes are high on my love to paint list lately. There’s just something so relaxing about painting the night sky and watching the colors melt together.

Positivity/Self Care Random Holidays in October

5 – National Be Nice Day
5- National Do Something Nice day
7 – National Inner Beauty Day – don’t we all need a reminder to recognize our inner beauty?
13 – National No Bra Day – I’m not sure how many people would consider this day self-care, but I do! What’s your opinion about this day?
17 – Mulligan Day – seriously, look this one up. When I read what it meant, I knew I had to include it. Everyone deserves a second chance.
19 – Evaluate Your Life Day – enough said. Spend some time journaling or thinking about your goals. Then make your plans and live it out. Decide what you’d like to change. You could even celebrate Mulligan day a couple of days late and take a second chance!
29 – National Hermit Day – because sometimes you need a break from society to restore your mental health.

Monthly Holidays

All month long, you can celebrate “I’m Just Me Because…” and Emotional Wellness Month.

Every first Friday of October – celebrate World Smile Day
Every 4th Saturday of October – randomly celebrate Make a Difference Day

Get a handle on your finances during October’s Financial Planning Month. I don’t know about you, but when I have my finances under control, it’s always a reason to celebrate. I dedicate a lot of pages in my bullet journal to tracking finances but I also use an app called “You Need a Budget” (believe me, I’ve used many programs and have stuck with this one for several years). It helped save our finances during a year of unemployment. How do you track your finances?

Animal Celebrations

4 – World Animal Day
8 – World Octopus Day
20 – International Sloth Day – celebrate this day in two ways. The first by celebrating this slow-moving animal. The second way to celebrate is to slow yourself down and take a break from stress.
27 -Black Cat Day

All month long you can celebrate Bat Appreciation Month and Black Cat Appreciation month. I don’t know if there is a more perfect month than October for these Random holidays.

I love to doodle animals – to celebrate world animal day (and other various animal days), I created these fun animal outline pintables available in my shop!

Random Holidays – Google Calendar

After celebrating different holidays for over a year, I decided to create a Google Calendar to see all the holidays I’d love to celebrate. It makes it easy to share creations, words, and ideas on social media and with friends and family. The best part about Google calendars is that you can toggle them on and off when you don’t want to see them.

If you click on the calendar item, it has a link to the source & relevant hashtags! I’m always evolving this calendar – and I will add calendar days or corrections all the time.

Tip: The calendar will show the current month, you can navigate to the month of your choice by using the arrows or dropdown.

If you want to add my calendar to your Google calendar:

  • Go to your Google calendars and click the + next to other calendars
  • Choose ‘add other calendars.’
  • Then click Subscribe to Calendar
  • After that, paste the text below in the “add calendar.”
  • Toggle the schedule on and off when you want to access it – that’s what I do.

chocolatemusings.com_q316ucpnldal611fs2q2nnk7v0@group.calendar.google.com

I won’t list all the random holidays, but just the ones that work with ChocolateMusings.com – so, of course, you’ll see a lot of food, art, creativity & some miscellaneous holidays are thrown in as well.

5 Tips to Get Back to Bullet Journaling

August 10, 2021 Leave a Comment

5 Tips to Return to Bullet Journaling and Create a Useful, Functional Planner - tips for starting fresh when it's been a while | ChocolateMusings.com

Are you trying to get back to bullet journaling after a long absence? Me too. I want to get back into it, and know that I need to, because it was the only method of keeping a planner (aka my life together) that’s ever worked. So to give you ideas for jumping back into bullet journaling. I’ll include the things I do to ‘get back on the wagon’ after an absence, no matter how long.

I know I’ve neglected this blog and so many other things, including my planner and bullet journal. But I knew I had to give myself time. It is time to adjust to the new reality in my life and time to form all the changes in my life. Because heaven knows I’m burnt out.

If you’re trying to get back in the swing of things after a long unintended break, we are in the same boat. I believe everyone will agree that the past 12 months have been life-altering in some way, form, or fashion. For me, I became the sole income earner in our household. My husband lost his job early in April, and boy has it been a struggle for me.

Table of contents

  • Give Credit Where Credit Is Due
  • When You Get Back to Bullet Journaling
  • #1 – Go Back to the Beginning, The Basics
    • How to do it:
  • #2 – Review and Eliminate – Include Just the Essentials
  • #3 – Add Pages or Trackers Back in Slowly
  • #4 – Make Your Bullet Journal Convenient to Use
  • #5 – Craving Something? Include It.
  • Tip #6 – Review (Bonus Tip!)
  • Conclusion

Give Credit Where Credit Is Due

Let’s stop for a minute, and I have to say kudos to you. Yes, you, the one reading this post. Kudos to you for holding your head high and taking that next step when you don’t feel like you can go on. Good job for making it this far in whatever struggle you’re going through. Because I feel it, the struggle is physical, emotional, spiritual, all the -als. (is money an -al word? If not, it should be!) All of this nonsense has hit us in our wallets, too.

I crave something consistent in my life. I yearn for some element that I know I control no matter what. Then it came to me. I wanted this before I started bullet journaling. It’s the same feeling! I need to return to my roots when I discovered this method. The process and implementation may change, but the fundamental approach is there.

I decided to include a page called “Give Credit Where Credit is Due” in my bullet journal this year. It’s a page where I write down the good things that I do and often write them off as ‘luck’ or try to downplay accomplishments.

When You Get Back to Bullet Journaling

Your bullet journal might not look like it did when you left. Meaning, you might not need to include the same things you did before quarantine, and our lives were turned upside down. That’s when I get overwhelmed and don’t know what I need to do. Here are some tips to help you get back to bullet journaling – modified now to fit your current needs.

#1 – Go Back to the Beginning, The Basics

Start over. Start again. That’s my first tip to get back into bullet journaling when you’ve lost the momentum for a while. Remember when you first started with your planner – what did that feel like? What were your ambitions and intentions? Even if the method changes, your overall purpose might be the same.

For instance, for me, I have a few items on my weekly schedule. But I have many to-dos, and I love to record the random thoughts and my past experiences. I also use my bullet journal as a creative outlet. None of those things have changed for me.

So the way I carry out the bullet journal might be a little different, but I intend to do the same thing with it that I started.

How to do it:

Take an inventory of the reason behind your bullet journal. Have your basic needs changed? What do you need to track?

P.s. Don’t feel guilty for starting a new book. Chances are you have an empty notebook in a drawer or shelf calling your name. Use the opportunity for a fresh start.

#2 – Review and Eliminate – Include Just the Essentials

New year, new bullet journal setup for 2021 - Index Page Organization with Washi Tape | ChocolateMusings.com

If you haven’t done so already, make a list of the things you need to track. Review your list and make sure that you do not include items just for the sake of including them. If you did them in the past, great. You don’t have to do them now if they don’t fit your current needs.

I’ve learned over the past year that when I feel overwhelmed, I have to eliminate anything that isn’t necessary. So if you used to track 20 habits every day, and now the idea of monitoring that many habits seem entirely overwhelming – stop. If you feel compelled to track habits, start with one or two or even the top three. Ease back into it. Make them habits you will work on. After all, tracking habits is a habit as well.

Take Away: Your bullet journal should never be overwhelming. It should absorb all of those to-dos, those thoughts, those schedules running amok in your brain and give a central place to maintain them. That gives me a sense of relief, and I hope it does for you, too.

If you don’t feel relief and instead feel stressed when using your notebook, well, then it might be time to change the way you’re using it. Eliminate the things that stress you out. Streamline your process. Focus on using the book to your advantage instead of creating an obstacle.

#3 – Add Pages or Trackers Back in Slowly

Once you’ve figured out which essentials you need to track or include in your bullet journal, start adding the other items back in, one by one. Add a new habit next month—experiment with making adjustments to your bullet journal to help you get back into it.

Remember: if it doesn’t feel like it’s working and it feels more like you’re fighting with your journal, don’t do it.

#4 – Make Your Bullet Journal Convenient to Use

November Thankful welcome page in my bullet journal - heart wreath with watercolor | ChocolateMusings.com

If you have to dig around for your bullet journal, chances are you won’t use it. An essential part of getting back to bullet journaling is to make it convenient. Set it out at night, so it’s the first thing you see in the morning. Review your to-dos, review your schedule. Make your planner a part of your plan. Nothing will ever help you if you don’t use it. So make it convenient to use.

#5 – Craving Something? Include It.

Alright, you’ve now done some heavy elimination in your quest to get back to using your bullet journal. You started at the beginning, revamped the reason for using this hunk of paper in your purse. You’ve reviewed the reasons why you want to get back to bullet journaling and eliminated every unessential thing (and maybe added in a few items).

Now you’re itching to add some fun back in. Do it! Don’t try to limit yourself if you feel like you want to include it in your notebook. This sort of craving isn’t going to add pounds to your hips. But it is going to add joy to your planner. If you can’t tell by reading my blog or watching my YouTube channel, I don’t use my bullet journal for function only. Don’t get me wrong, it’s functional for keeping track of the things I want, but it is a lot of fun. I know I wouldn’t have stuck with something so long if it weren’t fun.

Make sure you include the fun things that you crave. Live life, thrive! Don’t just survive.

Tip #6 – Review (Bonus Tip!)

Goal Assessment - take time to review your intentions and see how things measured up to your expectations | ChocolateMusings.com

Lastly, here’s a bonus tip. Review what you are doing. Make a record of the new things you tried and rate them or evaluate how they served you. Add a short note of what you’d like to change, improve or include for the next month. You can even make these notes throughout the month, so your review is effortless when planning the next period or month. Allow your bullet journal to be dynamic and to change with your needs. Get back to the way you need your bullet journal to be and let it conform to your life instead of you conforming to it.

Conclusion

I hope these tips can help you get back to bullet journaling and make the most of those blank pages so you thrive, not just survive.

What Does August Mean to You?

I sure love the smell of a freshly sharpened pencil bouquet and newly opened chalk and erasers. Don’t you relish the sight of all those chiseled markers in various colors ready to call attention to reading, writing, and math questions? Where we live, August is the start of a brand-new school year. And we start early in the month, the first Monday!

I love school supplies partially because they go so well with my notebooks. But I have always loved them. I worked for an office supply store for a long time, and people knew to ask me questions about pens and paper because I was passionate about them. If you have a favorite pen or are picky about your notebook, then you know what I mean.

You can check out my list of favorite lettering supplies or bullet journal supplies in these posts.

New Schedules = Second Chances?

August also signifies the start-up of new schedules for the coming months for us. It’s almost like a second chance at the year! No matter when you start the school year here’s an opportunity to add some fun to your calendar with the random holidays for August.

Holiday Categories

I certainly don’t include all the Random Holidays for any given month, so you’ll find a list of websites at the bottom of this post that you can search for additional holidays that suit your family. I also created a Google Calendar, which is shared for free. Included underneath the calendar are instructions on how to add the calendar to your view. You can toggle it on and off, so it doesn’t clutter your regular schedule.

I like to break the Random Holidays into sections like food, outdoors, and other holidays. I hope you find something (or a few) to celebrate this August!

Week/Month Long Celebrations

Simplify Your Life Week. Now this is a week I can get behind. Use the time to refocus and declutter. Though we often think of ‘things’ to declutter NationalDayCalendar.com suggests decluttering anything (not just objects) that causes stress or anxiety. I’m definitely going to start with a list of things I can either eliminate or reduce in my life.

What are some ways you could simplify your life?

Be Kind to Humankind Week. Last Week in August. The touching story of why Lorraine Jara was inspired to create this week really hits home. How often have we ignored an opportunity to be kind to others? It’s one of my life goals to be more kind.

Random Food Holidays in August

2 – Ice Cream Sandwich Day
3 – Watermelon Day
4 – Chocolate Chip Cookie Day
6- National Root Beer Float Day – are you an ice cream or root beer first when creating this tasty recipe?
10 – S’ mores Day
18 – National Fajita Day – Yum! This is one meal my family doesn’t argue (too much) about when I fix it. I guess I know what’s on the menu tonight!
20 – National Lemonade Day
24 – Waffle Day
25 – Banana Split Day
29 – National Lemon Juice Day – when life gives you lemons, what do you make?

We love waffles in our house, so even though waffle day is celebrated more than once in the year, we don’t miss it! I know what we are having for dinner on the 24th.

Celebrating with food is the easiest way to highlight the day. Although I love to doodle or paint food, so making something to represent it is always an option!

Creativity

World Calligraphy Day – 2nd Wednesday of August – celebrate by buying a calligraphy pen or letter your favorite quote. Don’t have a favorite quote? Find a list of my favorite inspirational quotes here. Or try a variant of calligraphy by starting your handlettering journey!

What’s your favorite joke? We have silly ones in our house that the kids made up but don’t make any sense. Whether you tell a joke on the 16th or not, you could record the silly jokes your kids used to say or write some down in your journal.

Indoor/Outdoor

August Indoor Random Holidays

9 – Book Lovers Day – Whether you celebrate this random holiday indoors or outdoors, use the excuse to grab a book and enjoy it.
10 – Lazy Day – Here’s your permission to laze about and get nothing done. Take a day and be lazy. It’s part of the celebration.
15 – Relaxation Day – go ahead and relax! You’ve worked hard (even on lazy day)!

Outdoor Holidays

6 – Cycle to Work Day
7 – Light House Day
11 – Mountain Day – celebrated in Japan, it spread to other countries as well. Where could you go hiking or just view a majestic mountain? Take a day to appreciate nature in the form of mountains. In 2021, Japan will celebrate this holiday on the 9th instead of the 11th to coincide with the end of the Summer Olympics.
16 – Roller Coaster Day
30 – Beach Day
31 – Eat Outside Day

Images of lighthouses are some of my favorites, with the surf crashing against the side and the light shining true no matter what. It is absolutely one of my favorite images. I know I need to celebrate lighthouse day by pinning some spectacular lighthouse images & maybe painting a few.

Celebrate Animals

4 – International Clouded Leopard Day
8 – International Cat Day
10 – Spoil Your Dog Day – as if we need an excuse!
12 – World Elephant Day

17 – National Black Cat Appreciation Day – I thought they had a day in October. But I’ll appreciate a velvety soft black cat any day.
19 – International Orangutan Day

August Random Holidays

8 – Happiness Happens Day #happinesshappensday
12 – Middle Child Day
13 – Left Hander’s Day
27 – Just Because Day
28 – Bow Tie Day

I think that Happiness Happens Day is a perfect day to include in this random holiday calendar! According to the National Day Calendar, this day was founded in 1999 by the Secret Society of Happy People. They identified 31 ways to be happy. Check it out and see how many ways you enjoy being happy.

Which Random Holidays Will You Celebrate in August?

I hope you found some inspiration this August to celebrate some random holidays or to make something creative to break up the monotony of the day-to-day. That’s my goal with these random holidays every month. When I look back, I want unique memories that last instead of looking back and figuring out where the time went.

Be sure to add some fun days to your bullet journal or planner. It’s the only way I remember to celebrate.

Journal Prompts to Help You Try New Things

Journal Prompts to Help You Decide to Try New Things - Reflections of the past & looking forward | ChocolateMusings.com

Do you like to try new things? Or are you like me and decide that you don’t like something (before giving it a fair chance)? Here is some journal prompts to help you explore your experiences with trying new things.

I am all about connecting ideas. Listing commonalities between multiple items, finding differences, or general list making all fall into my ‘enjoy’ category. Have you ever tried something new you swore you would never try (and liked it)?

{Timidly raises hand} <– That’s me.

What event, person, or circumstance changed your mind?

WHY Don't You Try New Things?

Why Don’t We Like To Try New Things?

It’s incredible how hard-headed I can be about doing or trying new things, but once I do, I like them (and sometimes a lot).

Two reasons why I won’t try new things:

  1. I’m stuck in my old habits.
  2. I’m rebellious or contrary to someone who wants me to try the new thing.

Do you have a list of things you vowed you’d never try?

A Shortlist of the Things I Vowed I’d Never Try

Here’s a shortlist of the things I vowed I’d never try (I’m sure there’s more out there). Okay, ‘vow’ is a strong word, but there were reasons behind each of them (or so I tell myself). But now that I did try these ‘new’ things I think differently.

  • Sour cream
  • Brussell Sprouts
  • Chromebook
  • Watercolor painting
  • Making my bed habitually (it couldn’t make that much difference, could it?)
  • Mangos (how do you get into those things?!)
  • Morning Routine
  • Apple Products
  • Brain Dumps
Williams Shakespeare Quote - It's not in the stars that hold our destiny, but in ourselves - Watercolor Bullet Journal Quote | ChocoalteMusings.com

Examples of the ‘New’ Things I Tried:

As a kid, I was a VERY picky eater. I would only eat cantaloupe when I was three. (Sidenote: As the mother of a very picky eater, I have no idea of how my parents were so patient with me.) Once I left for college, I tried many new foods and loved them.

All of these examples seem very small, but they’ve made a huge impact on my life. If only I would have tried these ‘new things’ earlier. What would be different?

The Tale of Sour Cream:

At an overnight girl’s camp when I was 12 or 13, we had fire-baked potatoes. Those potatoes smelled so good. Along with the baked potatoes were many toppings and one of the toppings was sour cream. Dolloping that creamy goodness onto my steaming potato and piling high other delicious toppings, I dug into my meal without thinking twice.

I don’t know if it was that I was not around my parents and didn’t feel the need to be so rebellious or if I was famished from a day of hiking in the heat and was slightly delirious, not knowing what I was stuffing into my mouth. Still, I tried sour cream (without realizing what it was), and surprisingly, it was good!

Shocked by my change of opinion, I begged the leaders not to tell my parents that I tried sour cream, which, I’m sure they thought was an odd request. They probably told my parents simply because it was strange for me to make a big deal about trying sour cream.

What in life have you finally tried after years of avoiding it? What was the outcome?

  • Shiny, Sparkly Space Watercolor Bookmarks
  • Watercolor Paint Brushes

Watercoloring – What’s Not to Like?Another Example of Trying New Things (and Liking Them):

Watercoloring is another example of things I wouldn’t try (but should have) earlier. For the longest time, I thought the color range for watercolor ranged from light pink to pastel blue and seafoam green. Now, there’s nothing wrong with pastel colors, but I am drawn to bright colors.

Mistakenly, I thought there were no bright colors in watercolor. I thought shadows and color depth came from acrylics or other opaque mediums. Admittedly, I don’t know where this idea originated! Perhaps, someone, I knew painted watercolors using only pastel tones.

Oh, how wrong I was! If only I would have tried this ‘new’ thing earlier!

On a whim, I tried watercoloring about two years ago. I hate to say it, but I think I missed out on a lifetime of using this fantastic medium. Despite my earlier assessment, it’s my favorite way to paint, now. I even figured out how to ‘paint with markers’ like watercolor in my planners. I now have to keep myself from buying new watercolors all the time.

New Experiences Await You

Gain New Experiences & Add New Stories to Your Life When You Try New Things

As you can tell, there’s a story behind each ‘new things I won’t try but did anyway’. Though that list for me is not comprehensive by any means, as a keeper of lists, I’ll add it to my journal and then add a short story of the experience that changed my mind.

What would you call this list of things you thought you’d never try, but then did?

Journal Prompts Header

Journal Prompts:

Here are a list of journal prompts related to trying new things:

  • What things have you tried (even though you said you wouldn’t)? And what changed your mind?
  • What new things did you like, and what new things did you try and dislike?
  • Why do you think you won’t try new things?
  • What are you gaining/losing by not trying this new thing?
  • Who influenced you to finally try the new thing? Was it a group of friends, or were you peer pressured into doing it? Or were you entirely alone when you tried it?
  • Why was being alone (or with others) the catalyst to get you to try the new thing?
  • What would be different if you would have tried it sooner?
