Plan the Planner: Introducing the Theme – A Christmas Story

December Here Already?!?

It’s nearly December and almost the conclusion of 2017. The end of the year always makes me reminisce and this is time is no different.

2017 has been extremely eventful. I had my 3rd (and most likely last) baby in February, just after we were getting back on our feet from my husband being out of work for 5 months in 2016. My parents spent several weeks going between my house and my sister’s house due to the baby, weddings, missions, etc. They managed to catch a few of my nephew’s sporting events too. Summer was a blur. My kids enjoyed the outdoors and swimming pool most of all but I worked like crazy.

Summer Confessions

I also fell in love this summer – I discovered handlettering and one head over heels moment, I knew I was hooked. I could walk affectionately hand-in-hand with this newly developed talent. After all, I have given it hours of my free time, I hope this relationship is going somewhere. (I really do think it will – I love it so much! )

My older kiddos started school and I can’t believe this year is nearly half-over. Those two astound me in so many ways. Legos, books, library, more legos, princesses, fingernail paint, space exploration have consumed the rest of my time. They are good kids and I am grateful for them.

December Has All the Feels

This December, however, I have a new feeling-one that I’ve missed for so many years. I have a feeling of determination. What an incredible feeling that is! What a void it fills in my life. Looking back, the absence is felt retroactive. It is simply astounding that I can give a little to myself and see a huge return in the rest of my life. For too long I have neglected myself and sacrificed my goals for the supposed betterment of my family. I now know that they were going nowhere right along with me. It is only once I propel myself forward that they follow as well.

This month I am changing things up for my intro videos and my planner, I decided to do a big plan the planner video and shorter, smaller videos for each page since they were all unique, fun pages. Last month’s theme was simple and minimal and I enjoyed it – each week had a new layout, but each spread was similar. To be honest, I think the simplicity got me through the month. There were so many outside sources trying to tear me off course. I think I could have careened off the path and easily shut myself away. It’s interesting when something gives you the motivation to keep going. My bullet journal did just this. And thank goodness.

The Theme for the Month: Plan the Planner

This month, I wanted a bit more whimsy and added creativity. We have so many Christmas-time traditions that I wanted to add to the fun of the season. The theme this month (if you didn’t read the blog title) is A Christmas Story. The movie is chock full of hilarious one-liners. With scenes you’ll never forget. The bunny costume. The Lamp. The Flag Pole and the frozen tongue. The broken glasses. Decoding in the bathroom. Changing the tire. Christmas dinner in the restaurant. Classic – all of this is classic.

Watch the video below for a plan-the-planner preview video for all the layouts and let the fun begin.

I purposely kept each week very wide-open for day-to-day planning. I figure this time of year flexible plans are required, so that is what I tried to do for the day-to-day planning. The more flexible you are, the better you’ll be at managing change.

Welcome Page Plans

I plan on filling in the front page with one-liner quotes from all the best Christmas movies and marking off the ones we watch on my holiday bucket list. My plan is to paint each page and then release a short video about each page with a blog post. View the welcome page post here. Here are some other sneak peaks of the completed pages. Be sure to check back throughout December for the full posts!

Planning Ahead

In the meantime, I’ve already started thinking about goals and plans for next year. Do you have your word or phrase picked out to kick off 2018? I’m still contemplating what I might do.

Here are some ideas floating around my head:

  • Plan
  • Grow
  • Love
  • Energize (yep, like the bunny)
  • Energy
  • Focus
  • Bloom
  • Reignite
  • Ignite
  • Stronger
  • Gratitude

It’s amazing when you find one inspirational person, but when you stumble upon a whole community – inspiration doesn’t stop. I’ve never had a life-theme before. Well, maybe. A theme for a day is “don’t punch anyone” or “just get through this” but a theme for a week, a month, a year? Unheard of in my life. But as I have read and studied and interacted with the creative people in the #lettering & #bulletjournal communities, a newfound desire to inspire others has been deeply planted within my soul. I figure I cannot inspire others if I don’t know where I am going.

Amid the fun and traditions of this season, I expect to do a lot of introspection to focus on what I want to bring to you.

Let me know in the comments below what your word or quote will be next year and what amazing plans you have for the coming season. With that, I hope you plan your life so you live more beautifully.

Remember to plan your life so you live beautifully.
